A Soushi Photo
Name, where are you from?
Soushi. Born in Kumamoto, living in Tokyo.
What do you do?
DJ / Track Maker / Skater.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
One of Sade's live shows. I have quite a few on videotape. I remember they played 'The Sweetest Taboo' and 'Cherish The Day'. I’ve always loved New York, and I’ve been there several times. I remember being in a cafe and they were playing Sade… I’m not sure why but it just seemed to be a perfect match. After that, I got the video from a New York friend and started collecting their records. I’ve sampled some Sade tracks in the past, but I’ve never released anything because I’ve yet to bring it up to the level of some of the amazing DJs who have gone before me.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
I’m a skater, so I’ve been exposed to lots of hardcore punk and rock. Bands like Black Sabbath, for example. I’ve listened to them since I was around sixteen or seventeen. When I was younger, the other skaters around me listened to a lot of hip-hop, and I used to do that, too. But when I came across punk and rock, it blew my mind—it was completely fresh. After that, I began listening to all kinds of music.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
The Daikanyama club, UNIT. I’ve been invited to DJ there quite a few times. The sound is great and it’s just the perfect size for a club.
If you could be on the lineup with any bands in history?
I'd have to choose Sade again, here. It’s not something I do much of now, but I’d like to create some live beats for Sade to sing over. It would be the Sade Adu of around the time they released 'Promise'. I’m a fan of songs where the focus is all on the vocals.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
It doesn’t quite answer the question, but I’m listening to lots of Lovers Rock at the moment. I’d love to experience that scene firsthand during the back-end of the '70s. I’d like to hang out with someone like Janet Kay—just have an hour where she’d come to my studio, and we’d play a session together.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
I’m going to say M1llionz. He’s a rapper who’s come on the scene quite recently. He’s a UK drill rapper who manages to weave his inspiration into the tracks really well. It creates this super cool rap style. Another rapper I like is Wiki—his parents are Irish and Chinese.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Iron Man' by Black Sabbath. It’s from the album 'Paranoid' that I listened to nonstop when I was a teenager. I still listen to it—I put it on when it’s raining to put me in a good mood.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'For Your Love' by Hil Street Soul, the UK R&B artist. It’s a song that my friend introduced me to. My parents used to listen to a lot of R&B, and I’m a big fan of this track.
One record you would keep forever?
'Diamond Life' by Sade. It’s the same mellow and cool feeling as the rest of their albums. I never get tired of it.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
I’ve never really thought about it. I listen to UK rap, but my ears aren’t really locked into the language. If we are talking about Japanese artists, then the band Fishmans and their song 'Ikareta Baby' (Crazy Baby). I know the Glittering Rewinder mix—it sets my mind at ease.
Best song to turn up loud?
I’m going to say Janet Kay’s version of 'Lovin’ You'. I knew the Minnie Ripperton original, but when I heard Janet’s rendition on the radio, I went straight to the record shop and picked it up dirt-cheap. It’s too well-known to play during one of my DJ sets, but it came in handy when I was playing at weddings.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Lorelei' by Foehn, the French progressive rock artist. I found it when I was hunting for material I could sample.
New bands you are listening to now?
The Fanatix. I got to know them because M1llionz features on one of their tracks. I’m always trying to push the boundaries with what I do, so I was digging into UK drill and discovered their track 'These Streets (Don’t Luv U)'.
