Name, where are you from?
I’m Vanny from sunny Singapore!
What do you do?
I’m currently pursuing my Bachelors in Communication Design at RMIT in Melbourne.
Describe your style in three words?
Tees, pants and sneakers.
Which music defines the teenage you?
Anything on the radio.
A British icon who has inspired you, and why?
Jorja Smith. A queen! She makes great music and writes beautifully. She inspired me to trust myself— even during those times that I don’t feel confident. I know what I can do as an artist and I just have to stay focused on doing what I love to do.
What has been your all-time favourite gig?
So hard to choose... They’ve all hit me hard in the feels. I guess at the top of my head I’d say: Neck Deep, Caracal at Baybeats 2015, MHC at House of Vans 2016, Bruno Major and every Forest's gig.
What is your favourite independent venue to watch live music?
Esplanade Annexe Studio and Substation. BluJaz Cafe used to have super good live music too.
Do you have a favourite local record shop?
I frequent Retrocrates because Celia and Dennis (the owners) are super sweet. I go to Hear Records too to find old music — Nick (the owner) introduced me to City Pop.
What was the first song you played on repeat?
'Must Get Out' by Maroon 5. Maroon 5 is the first band I listened to and loved in primary school.
A song you wish you'd written?
'Don’t Watch Me Cry' by Jorja Smith. It has the most relatable lyrics.
A song from your favourite album?
'She' by Ed Sheeran from 'Songs I Wrote With Amy'. This EP is so cute and so intimate. I felt the love and butterflies coming through the music :)
What is the last piece of music you bought?
'Disco-Fied' by Rhythm Heritage on vinyl. I’ve been really into groovy disco music recently.
Best song to bring people together?
'Dancing In The Moonlight' by Toploader. BEST nostalgic good vibes singalong song in my opinion. Heard it when I was in primary school and it definitely brings back a lot of warm memories :)
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'17' by Youth Lagoon. The most calming music.
The best love song of all time?
'Angel' by Shaggy. No particular reason, the lyrics speak for itself!
Is there a song you like that people wouldn't expect?
'グッド・ラック' by Shintaro Sakamoto. I like a very wide range of music and maybe songs in a different language might be the most unexpected to those who know me.
What new music are you listening to?
I’ve recently been introduced to different music from Japan. Bands like Miceteeth, Falls and WANIMA. Lonely Benson too, I enjoy their nice, chill Bossanova vibe.
