A The Velvet Hands Photo
Name?
The Velvet Hands
Where are you from?
We met at Truro College in Cornwall but have now moved to Kilburn, London.
What do you do?
We rock and we roll.
Describe your style in three words?
Leather, Velvet and Fur.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
PJ Harvey at The Eden Project was incredible. She came on with this mad marching band.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Iggy Pop and The Clash.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
The Dandies of the 1800’s, of course.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Probably Robert Johnson to find out the truth about the devil, and if he could pass on the secrets of shredding to The Velvet Hands.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
The Old Bakery in Cornwall is such a great venue. The Underground or The Junction in Plymouth for the best crowds.
Who is your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
People don’t talk about Tom Waits enough.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Someday' by The Strokes.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'I Don’t Want To Grow Up' by The Ramones.
One record you would keep forever?
'Koka Kola' by The Clash.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Na na na na na na na, Hey Jude..."
From 'Hey Jude' by The Beatles.
A song you wished you had written?
'Strangers' by The Kinks.
Best song to turn up loud?
'L.A. Woman' by The Doors.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Yes Sir, I Can Boogie' by Baccara.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Home' by LCD Soundsystem.
Any new bands you are listening to right now?
'Getting Closer' by Calva Louise
We played with Calva Louise a couple of weeks ago and their sound and look was great.
'Twist it, Shake it, Rock and Roll' by Trudy & The Romance
These guys have really good pop songs.
'Bubblegum' by YONAKA
They performed for the This Feeling TV night and I was instantly convinced.
'Bombscare' by Touts
Great energy. The Clash meets The Jam.
