A Joe Hertz Photo
Name, where are you from?
Joe Hertz, South London.
Describe your style in three words?
professionally under-dressed.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I went to see Amon Tobin at the Roundhouse back in 2011, it was the craziest, most mind-blowing show I have ever seen. It felt like the pinnacle of what could be achieved in an electronic music show. Check it out online if you don’t know what I’m talking about...
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Frankie Knuckles - The Godfather. Would love to have experienced playing in a club during the late '80s. Mad thought.
Erykah Badu - She was the first person I sampled when I started making music. Always been a huge fan of her style, Bass heavy R&B.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
I’ve always grown up obsessed with Japanese culture. I guess things like Manga, anime and video games always allowed me an escape from any sh*t that was going on.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Nujabes, without a doubt. A purist music lover. If I'm ever in doubt I just put on Nujabes. If he was still with us I would give anything to spend an hour with him, watching him sample something.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
Has to go to a club called Soap in Seoul, South Korea. It's a mad pocket of love for future electronic music.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Don Blackman. Dude played with the greats like Parliament, Earth Wind & Fire and Roy Ayers as a session musician. He’s been sampled by Snoop Dogg and Jay Z. Ridiculous bass lines. Always thought his legacy deserves so much more praise!
Joe Hertz is the son of legendary DJ Pete Tong and has spent the majority of his life immersed in the UK dance culture.
Having DJ'd from an early age Joe then also began to develop his production skills. Paired with his dance background, his music incorporates elements of American RnB and Hip-Hop and sees him team up with rising British soul artists and vocalists to create his unique sound.
Listen to his latest track 'Fight or Flight' below.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Firestarter' by Prodigy. Obviously a classic but it was because it was used in a game called Wipeout on the PS1. My first experience of repeat listening.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Doin' Time/Summertime' by Sublime.
One record you would keep forever?
'Twin Peaks Theme' by Angelo Badalamenti.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"And I wonder,
When I sing along with you,
If everything could ever feel this real forever,
if anything could ever be this good again."
From 'Everlong' by Foo Fighters.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Regulate' by Warren G & Nate Dogg.
A song you wished you had written?
'Millionaire' by Kelis.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Everlong' by Foo Fighters.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'The Lamb' by John Tavener.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Timeless' by John Abercombie.
Any new bands/artists you are listening to right now?
'Professor Tatsuru Kensu (Scrimshire Remix)' by Gaijin Blues.
'Skin On Skin' by Franc Moody.
'Glitter' by Amber Simone.
'Sofa' by Collard.
'Ava' by Pip Millet.
'Hurts' by Joy Crookes.
