Name, where are you from?
Luke Brennan, I'm from the Mucklands past the highest peak where the crane's beaks carry babies. Way off in the clouds.
Describe your style in three words?
Eclectic eccentric extravagant.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
There are so many to choose from. The one that comes to mind immediately is Mdou Moctar in the grounds of a tiny church in a Catalonian village, the day after their equipment was stolen in Barcelona.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Miles Davis and Lil Wayne.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Probably every subculture has influenced me to a certain extent. I see my self as chameleonic so have always shuffled through various subcultures every day of the week. So to speak. I love the brothel creepers of the teddy boys in the ’50s, the flares of San Francisco in the ’70s, I also love the zoot suits from the '40s, I could literally go on forever. Back to the native garments of the Hutsuls and beyond.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Joseph Beuys - to be able to pick apart his brain, ask about his rituals and relationship to objects and to inquire on his methods of self-discipline in relation to creative activities and education.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
I really enjoy spaces that haven't been specifically purposed for music. When I started going to gigs in my teens there was an old toilet factory and I saw some amazing shows there. So that probably has to take the top spot, due to nostalgic reasons.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Probably Viv Stanshall from The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band but I'm not sure he’s unsung. I'll let the people decide that. But he was always willing to push boundaries for the sake of art and music whether that be through songwriting, performance or nonsense. Also, his thoughts on crowd participation particularly resonate with me. Plus he had an iconic style that became synonymous with him, making himself almost cartoon-like but don’t mistake that for any lack of seriousness.
