03Interview

Describe your style in three words?

Punk funk sober.

The first track you played on repeat?

Sex Pistols - Bodies - Remastered 2012

Bought in Toronto, so had the pink cover version and the "I’m not an animal" chant added to the anger a little.

A song from your favorite album?

Boogie Down Productions - My Philosophy - Extended Version

When this LP dropped BDP were recovering from the recent loss of DJ Scott La Rock and all eyes were on KRS One to see how he would face into the future. With intelligent lyrics, historical references and driving production, this song caught a moment in hip-hop perfectly.

A song from your most memorable gig?

The Specials - Nite Klub - Live at the Moonlight Club, May 1979

It’s hard not to skank furiously to this family favourite, always a floor filler and one for the rude boys. My son took me to see them at Manchester Apollo in 2015, awesome to share the love for ska with the next generation.

A song that always gets you up and dancing?

The Vision - Heaven (feat. Andreya Triana) - Danny Krivit Edit

Hard not to keep still or smile when this one drops, everything about this remix is uplifting and reaches every muscle. Hope the reader agrees!

A new song you're listening to?

Deijuvhs - Freakazoid

A bit new-age punk and we like that.

Best song to turn up loud?

The Exploited - Beat the Bastards

Anywhere and when an energy boost is needed.

A song that defines the teenage you?

Public Enemy - Rebel Without A Pause

As a 15-year-old about to do my O-Level (pre GCSE) exam, this landed as the B side to ‘You’re Gonna Get Yours’ and changed everything. Hip-hop was never the same, nor was sampling and conscious rap.

An anthemic song?

Minor Threat - Straight Edge

Designed to raise minds, move a crowd and wear out toxic attitudes.

Best song to end an all-nighter?

Dead Kennedys - Holiday in Cambodia

Guaranteed to get that final energy burst before dance floor exhaustion. Join in if you know the words.
