What do you do?
Actor, Singer.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Kamasi Washington 2019 Tour Live in Taipei. When you listen to Kamasi’s performance, it’s like you’re taken to another universe – time there goes by incredibly fast – I felt like I was flying – I didn’t want it to end. All of the musicians played together amazingly – the mind-blowing performances of the Double Bass and Keyboard musicians were also unforgettable. For all you Jazz lovers out there – I highly recommend you check out Kamasi’s Jazz classic, 'Heaven and Earth', sometime in your life.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Do Vanwa bar on Taiwan’s Lanyu island. During that time, I was on a trip, taking a loop around Taiwan island with my guitar in tow – the trip took thirteen days. When I was passing through Taitung, I suddenly decided to visit Lanyu island and hang out for a bit. On Lanyu island, people and nature exist together in deep harmony. The year I went there, Lanyu didn’t even have a convenience store and there wasn’t any cellular service other than near the airport. One evening, with nothing to do other than watch the moon and starlit sky, I stopped by the Do VanWa bar for a drink. After I got there, I ended up jamming some favourites with other travellers visiting from afar.
If you could be on the line up with any bands in history?
Chuck Berry. His life story is incredible beyond belief. Of all the blues I’ve listened to, Chuck Berry’s flow and stage presence (which you can only really appreciate on video) are the most unforgettable. I so wish I could go back in time to 1959 America and experience life together with him.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Duke Ellington. I’d like to accompany him as he drove to his next performance. I read a beautiful Jazz novel – it doesn’t examine a historical period, nor does it aggrandize some great person of the past. The author simply uses pen and paper to accompany living and breathing Jazz legends as they go through a certain phase of their life. At the beginning and end of each chapter, short vignettes of his famous between-gig road trips highlight and connect many of America’s famous Jazz venues. Taking a ride with the man that produced so many Jazz classics would be a memory I’d enjoy for the rest of my life.

The first track you played on repeat?
'Life’s a Struggle' by Shawn Song (宋岳庭). I remember I was only in third grade when I heard this song for the first time. At that time, I had no idea what he was singing, but at the same time, I could somehow feel his pain and suffering. This song has always had a deep impression on me. Fast forward to when I was in 10th grade – I was watching a show called 'Day’s We Stared at the Sun' (他們 在畢業的前⼀天爆炸) - one of the episodes played 'Life’s a Struggle' to tie up the main character’s emotional journey. Now that I could understand the song, I started crying uncontrollably.
One record you would keep forever?
'Ylang Ylang EP' by FKJ. In every single note and sound effect, this record has all the tranquillity, noise and reflection that I need. I think I could listen to this record for the rest of my life.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
'Good News' by Mac Miller. Whenever I listen to this song, I get such a pure feeling, like someone is telling me: “It’s okay. It doesn’t matter anymore, let out your deepest feelings and emotions. Just let it out. You’ll feel better”. Who would have thought this would be Miller’s last record. Every time I listen to this song, I feel inspired in the same way – a feeling of pure contentment and satisfaction.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Easy Easy' by King Krule. It’s just so satisfying. Putting this song on makes me feel young and impulsive again – it just makes me want to push back against the world! Whenever I sing music aloud, it definitely feels like something is changing inside.
New bands you are listening to now?
Jonah Yano. In my mind, he has a very new sound/voice…careful but also full of emotion… I just want to come back to it again and again.
