AAAMYYY (Tempalay), Nagano.
What do you do?

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
The Beatles. I definitely did not see them in real life but I have a bunch of collectors-edition DVDs at my parents' house, and the best goes to one of their early live footage. It was in black and white, with quality performance and editing as if it was a movie, indeed. A garage band captured in stylish manner. What perfection.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
That will be punk rock. I wasn’t directly involved in the subculture myself, though back then people I knew were very passionate about it. There is a popular manga called 'NANA' based on a band culture which had a lot of characters dressed like Sid Vicious, which I got inspired by. I then went on listening to the Sex Pistols via my sister.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Fuji Rock 2019. I played there as Tempalay at Red Marquee stage. The band formed with an ambition to play at Fuji Rock so it was the stage we had dreamt of. It was such a memorable experience because of the size of the crowd, that we’d never played in front of. Another one to mention would be the time when we played overseas at SXSW’16, again as Tempalay during our US tour. I remember a venue I liked playing, called the Double Door in Chicago. Obviously, we were an unknown Japanese indie rock band so I didn’t think really expect much attention, but it turned out great. We shared our excitement with the groovy audience.
If you could be on the line up with any bands in history?
Beabadoobee. A young talented musician isn’t she? Around 20 right now? I can totally relate to her style the most among the others so I’d love to go to her home studio to create tunes. I wouldn’t bother about who plays which part and all, both of us do vocal. I'm not the right person to perform with someone who passionately sings (laughs). I also thought about the Beatles, but they were just too great for me be involved and I wouldn't be able to do anything with them.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I’d love to follow Amy Winehouse, to wherever she wants to go. I wonder where she takes me to if we meet around 8pm.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Shout out to Beabadoobee. I found out about her through watching the livestream from her home on the KEXP. It was amazing. As I watched the show, a friend in another room thought I was the one singing. We sound similar, apparently… A nice word!

The first track you played on repeat?
'Yesterday' by The Beatles. I come from a farming family, and they have a cable TV station that streams about farming. Guess what, its background music is always The Beatles, plus the lunch hour chime that reached the surrounding fields is also the Beatles! The mayor of the area is might a fan of them? I wonder… (laughs).
A song that defines the teenage you?
'The Queen Is Dead' by The Smiths.
One record you would keep forever?
'I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful' by The 1975. I love everything about it, each track, and the style too. I would call it the ideal album.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
'The A Team' by Ed Sheeran. The lyric tells about the drug content, as the A team as the class that people with drug addiction would be put into, however, the metaphors he uses doesn’t develop into only one or two, but rather a multifaceted effect, sort of. Phrases and metaphors were amazingly literary.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Care' by Beabadoobee. It makes me want to sing out loud, especially while running!
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)' by One Direction. I happened to watch X-factor to see them debut and turn into a group of handsome men.
New bands you are listening to now?
I’m digging Ella Mai sound. A Japanese SIRUP told me about her.
