Describe your style in three words?
Freedom, heritage, music.
The first track you played on repeat? And where did you play it?
Jimi Hendrix - Foxey Lady
I know it's a bit cliché, but... I was about 13 at the time and pretty much clueless about music. I had slept at my mate's place, the following morning I woke up to this song blasting from his older sister's room. It really did flip a switch in my mind from then onwards.
A song from your favourite album? And what does this track mean to you?
Neil Young - Ambulance Blues - 2016 Remaster
It's impossible for me to pick a favourite album. That said, this album and this specific song really touch me. There's some drone melancholy in it that is quite relatable in 2020.
A song from your most memorable gig?
Temples - Mesmerise
It was a gig in Rough Trade East promoting their first album. I had been living in London for a couple months at that time. I got confused about how to get there and missed about 4/5 of their gig, but just as I got there the band started to play this song. Totally worth it.
A song that always gets you up and dancing?
Mildlife - Zwango Zop
If this doesn't make you get up and dance you're probably dead. Really. It's borderline shocking how groovy these four guys can get and I'm anxious for their new album.
A new song you're listening to? Why do you like this artist?
Jensen Interceptor - Auto Express
Okay, I get it, 2015 shouldn't count as "new", but last month I mixed an amazing synth-and-drum-machine-only electro EP that turned me on to some stuff that I'd usually not listen to. This was one of the references and I love it.
Best song to turn up loud? And why?
Graham Coxon - I Don't Wanna Go Out
Everything in this song sounds like it was made to be played loud. That's definitely not the kind of song that you'd listen to while quietly sat down, you can feel a lot of energy going on there.
A song that defines the teenage you? And the memories it evokes?
Art Brut - My Little Brother
I started to DJ on my really bland local indie rock nights when I was 17. Very often the bouncers kicked me out and the producers had to sneak me back in the club. As accurate as it gets even though I don't have an older brother.
An anthemic song? Why does it get your pulse racing?
Buzzcocks - Love You More
Pete Shelley could capture and crystallize into songs whatever kind of angst that introvert people constantly feel. At the same time it's the kind of song that you'd want to shout out loud along, that's powerful. I wish I could have seen Buzzcocks before he passed away.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
Black Heat - Barbara's Mood
This is such a perfect mellow out song. We've all been there, either on someone's sofa or in a night bus, completely exhausted. Just lay down and float downstream with this one.
