A headboy Photo
Name, where are you from?
Hello we are headboy, Mars Jess and Oli and we are all from London. North, South, West.
Describe your style (dress sense) in three words?
Washed-up sea urchins. Skater boy adjacent.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to (and why)?
We managed to catch English Teacher at The Old Blue Last this winter. It was one of those first come first served ones - there was a queue literally going out the door and we were pretty sure we wouldn’t get in, but fate was kind and granted us entry. We were all feeling the winter blues a little but English Teacher brought us into their world.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands/artists in history - who would it be and why?
Courtney Barnett, we admire her storytelling; she makes you want to be in a band. King Krule - similarly we love the sense of characters, eeriness - strong imagery.
Which subcultures have influenced you (and why)?
It feels like we grew up in London three times. Once when we were teenagers - trudging out to zone 6 every weekend for squat raves. Then again a few years later - finding a home in the queer DIY scene. Thirdly when we started playing shows and found our scene and all the people in it.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history - who would it be and why?
We are collectively reading Kim Gordon’s autobiography Girl in Band - would be cool to get tea sometime.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favorite (and why)?
The Windmill Brixton for sure. I guess it's where we started and also we’ve seen some great things there - Horsey, Lime Garden, Goat Girl, Sam Akpro. It feels like a home and a place to try new things.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music (and why)?
Our producer Joe Futak is undeniably a cornerstone of the DIY london scene, on a mission to make punk bands into Indie Folk. He also produces Lilo, nudista, Tapir, Mathilde and many more. We love working with him. He's an absolute star (and is also an Arsenal fan which helps…).
The first track you played on repeat?
Mars: Cats (Original London Cast Recording/1981 - The Overture)
Oli: Busted - Loser kid
Jess: Ms. Dynamite – Dy-Na-Mi-Tee
A song that defines the teenage you?
Mars: Animal Collective - Summertime Clothes
Oli: Libertines - Don’t look Back into the sun
Jess: Bon Iver - blood banks
One record you would keep forever?
Jess: Noname - Telefone
Oli: Bonobo - Migrations
Mars: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
A song lyric that has inspired you?
Everybody steps on ants. Everybody eats the plants. Everybody knows to dance, even with just one finger.
Big Thief - Spud Infinity
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
Girl Ray - Murder on the Dance Floor
A song you wished you had written?
Nilufer Yanya - In Your Head
Best song to turn up loud?
I Came As A Rat - Modest Mouse
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
A midsummers night dream Act 1: Overture - Benjamin Britten
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
Nobody Scared - Porij
Any new bands/artists you are listening to right now?
Fräulein, Wulu, Lex Amor, Been Stellar, Florist , Nukuluk, Noon Garden, Fake Fruit, PACKS
