SHOPS

Philip Browne,
Norwich

SEPTEMBER 2020

We shine a spotlight on some of our most exciting independent stockists around the globe. This time, we speak with the buying director of Philip Browne, Norwich’s finest menswear shop.

What’s your name and connection to the shop?

My name is Paul Harris and I’m the Buying Director for Philip Browne Menswear.

Tell us where you are

We are situated right in the city centre of Norwich, adjacent to the outdoor market and City Hall.

How did the shop come to be?

Philip has always loved clothes and fashion. He was an oil rig worker for 12 years but in 1986 decided to open Philip Browne Menswear with absolutely no experience of clothes or buying and selling! 34 years later he's still here.

Describe your shop in three words

Eclectic, personal, curated.

What makes your shop so special?

The personal touch from the knowledgeable, friendly staff. Yes, we have an incredible brand mix, but you need the personal touch to connect with your customer and to have them return, time after time.

Pick a song that represents your shop

Tom Waits - Step Right Up.

Tell us something not many people know about your shop?

We have a basement (changing rooms and stock room) that extends under the courtyard to the opposite building. In the 1920s and ‘30s it was one of the hippest jazz venues in the country.

Who are your favourite independent neighbours – your record shops and live music venues?

We have a lot of time for Soundclash Records - over the years we've bought a huge amount of our shop music from there. Live music wise, it's got to be the Arts Centre or The Waterfront. Space Studios has also hosted some amazing nights over the years too.
