A Plastic Estate Photo
Name, where are you from?
Plastic Estate (Stanley and Nic) from Cardiff, Wales
Describe your style in three words?
Classics, muted, dark.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
S: Bit on the nose for us, but I’ve got to say LCD Soundsystem. Didn’t know their music super well at the time but something about it really resonated with me.
N: Algiers. Floor-to-ceiling visceral chaos.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
S: Right now I’d love to play with Paradise Club - because they rock.
N: Roxy Music. Effortless style and understated anthems.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
S: At the moment I can’t stop listening to soundtracks from early 2000s racing games. Is that a subculture?
N: Modernism (Not Mod) - '50s Euro cinema meets Miles Davis meets Ivy League.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
S: I’d love to have a chat with George Daniel from The 1975 to talk production. We actually had a similar conversation on the way back from a show yesterday and everyone thought I was crazy for saying that.
N: Martin Hannett. An overlooked miracle worker.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
S: Saw Wild Nothing at Village Underground which is a nice venue. I think putting art in an industrial context is always interesting.
N: Urban Spree, Berlin. Like a well-managed squat.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
S: Horsebeach, always. Because they kill it on every release. Please tour again!
N: Paul Buchanan. Sincere and dangerously talented. A very humble human being.
Plastic Estate released their self-titled debut album on Avant! Records in February 2022. Listen, purchase or stream it via lnk.fu.ga/plasticestate_plasticestate.
The first track you played on repeat?
S: 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' by Green Day.
N: 'Crazy' by Gnarls Barkley.
A song that defines the teenage you?
S: 'Deadbeat Summer' by Neon Indian.
N: 'Sheila' by Jamie T.
One record you would keep forever?
S: 'Tides End' by Minks. It’s such a shame that they called it day.
N: 'Real Life' by Real Lies. Indeed, a life changer.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
S: “Before you go, turn the big light off”
From 'I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It' by The 1975.
N: “How did I get here?”
From 'Once In A Lifetime' by Talking Heads.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
S: 'Riverside' by Sidney Samson.
N: 'A Dream of You and Me' by Future Islands.
A song you wished you had written?
S: 'Keep Me Waiting' by George Michelle.
N: 'Underwater' by Porches.
Best song to turn up loud?
S: 'You Used To Hold Me' by Calvin Harris.
N: 'Only You' by Death Bells.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
S: 'thank u, next' by Ariana Grande.
N: 'Picture Of You' by Boyzone. The perfect pop song.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
S: Nothing too emotional… maybe 'Shine A Light (Flight Facilities Remix)' by C90s.
N: 'No Stranger' by Small Black.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
S: 'Lunar Eclipse' by Visages (ft. Strategy).
'When I See You' by Yawning Portal.
N: 'Energy Plan (Orbury Common Remix) ' by The Umlauts.
'Black Lights on the M6' by Blackhaine.
