A Sleep Eaters Photo
Name, where are you from?
We are Sleep Eaters and we are from South London.
Describe your style in three words?
Texas Car Salesman.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Neil Young at the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles, its where they host the Oscars. The gig was all seated, which added a sense of intimacy. Neil had all sorts of personalized props like Totem Poles, he even had a bed on stage. It was like being in his bedroom hanging out, 'Heart Of Gold' sounded just like the record.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
The Scientists as they are a great influence on our sound, they bring that swampy Australian mood, we'd go down well with them. Would be a spectacle to have The Byrds howling into the night to finish it off.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
The mid-'90s DIY scene when independent labels and venues joined forces to create a movement. It’s a subculture that resonated globally. The whole notion of doing it yourself is something we’ve all taken inspiration from having lived within warehouse communities, putting on our own shows and recording our own music.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Townes Van Zandt. He’s an absolute hero, a poetic genius with his songwriting, would be an honour to share a bottle of red with him.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
The Windmill in Brixton. It’s always been our favourite from the first time we played there and every show thereafter has topped the last. They always curate great line ups and it just feels like home whenever we are there, be it as a spectator or a band.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
It’s between Blaze Foley and Roky Erickson.
Blaze is a brilliant songwriter and never hit the big time but stayed true to his genre, he was passionate about his political values which is important when you have a voice that can carry them. Roky Erickson was a hell of a mind and went through some turbulent times suffering from mental illness for most of his adult life but was still shining bright after he recovered.
Sleep Eaters have just dropped their new single 'Bad Love', released via PNKSLM Recordings you can listen to it below.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Goo Goo Muck' by The Cramps.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Aneurysm' by Nirvana.
One record you would keep forever?
'Interstellar Overdrive' by Pink Floyd.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“Dance me to the children who are asking to be born,
Dance me through the curtains that our kisses have outworn,
Raise a tent of shelter now though every thread is torn,
And dance me to the end of love.”
From 'Dance Me To The End Of Love' by Leonard Cohen.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Cars' by Gary Numan.
A song you wished you had written?
'Mother Of Earth' by The Gun Club.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Honey Bucket' by The Melvins.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Wa-Do-Dem' by Eek-A-Mouse.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Sleep Walk' by Santo & Johnny.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Empyrean' by Crows.
'Serotonin Level' by Drahla.
'I Feel Fine' by Tiña.
'Gentrify Me' by Honkies.
'PetalHead' by Krush Puppies.
