A Wings Of Desire Photo
Name, where are you from?
We are Wings of Desire from London via the West Country.
Describe your style in three words?
New-Age Industrial.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
We saw Kate Bush on the opening night of her 'Before The Dawn' residency at Hammersmith Apollo. Felt like we were part of history just being in the same room as her.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
New Order because we are big fans of Factory, and they are the pinnacle of what it means to be a great band. And also Fontaines D.C. as they are the best ‘new’ band around.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
The '60s counterculture movement speaks to us as there was all this energy and critical thinking going on. You had Allen Ginsberg, Ram Dass, The Beatles learning Transcendental Meditation in India. People seemed to be really open and wanted the foundations of society to change.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
In terms of musicians, it would have to be George Harrison. He was always learning and trying to break out of the mould he was born into. He had to find his place being in a band with the two greatest songwriters of all time, yet managed to become egoless enough to write his own megahits and find his true calling.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Brudenell Social Club in Leeds is a pretty sacred spot. It’s just a magical place that is completely independent and really supports up and coming artists.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Richard Hell was kind of the pioneer of what became the punk movement in the '70s. Without him, things would have looked and sounded very different.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Peaches' by The Presidents Of The United States Of America.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Someone Great' by LCD Soundsystem.
One record you would keep forever?
'The Only Living Boy In New York' by Simon & Garfunkel.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind"
From 'For What It’s Worth' by Buffalo Springfield.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Hallogallo' by NEU!
A song you wished you had written?
'Heroin' by The Velvet Underground, Nico.
Best song to turn up loud?
'The House That Heaven Built' by Japandroids.
Best song to bring people together?
'Power To The People' by John Lennon.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'A New England' by Billy Bragg.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'The Wall & I' by Nation of Language.
Any new bands you are listening to right now?
'Teal' by Wunderhorse.
'Drift' by Sam Akpro.
