A Beach Riot Photo
Name, where are you from?
Beach Riot - we’re from Brighton. I’m Rory - singer/guitarist.
Describe your style in three words?
Proper old vintage.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
DZ Deathrays at The Old Blue Last, Halloween 2012.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Nirvana, circa 1990... those shows look absolutely nuts. Proper sweaty carnage, how it should be!
Cable, an incredible not very well known 90s British band. They’re one of our mutual favourite bands. Track - seventy
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Can’t hide from the early 90s grunge scene. Although it’s much bigger than that, I think a lot of bands get thrown into it but were actually doing their own thing. Something about the chords and melodies used, and the feeling of the lyrics, even in pop music of the time, just hugely resonates with me.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I’d honestly love to sit down and have a chat with Charles Darwin all about evolution.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Hands down the Concorde 2 in Brighton. It’s a legendary venue down here, amazing sound, amazing bands who’ve been through town play there. We were lucky to play a sold-out show there recently.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
All the badass girls leading the way in the 80s and 90s bands, Sleater-Kinney, Hole, Babes In Toyland, PJ Harvey, Sonic Youth, Elastica. It was such an amazing time from female-led incredible music.
Brighton four-piece Beach Riot describe their sound as "hooky catchy fuzzy noise". The band were recently included in the BBC's list of new bands to see at this year's Reading and Leeds Festival (2018).
The first track you played on repeat?
'Everyday' by Buddy Holly.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana.
One record you would keep forever?
'When Animals Attack' by Cable.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“Never met a wise man,
if so it’s a woman.”
'Territorial Pissings' by Nirvana. Kurt Cobain what a ridiculously good one-liner.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Steppin’ Out' by Joe Jackson.
A song you wished you had written?
'Life On Mars?' by David Bowie.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Succubus' by Demob Happy.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'A Perfect Day To Chase Tornadoes' by Jim White.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Aurora Borealis' by the Meat Puppets.
Any new bands you are listening to right now?
'I’m Gonna Do Well' by Calva Louise.
'Be Your Man' by Demob Happy.
