Musician / Producer — Berlin
A Daniel Krone Photo
Name, where are you from?
My name is Daniel, based in Berlin.
What do you do?
Collecting instruments to record and produce music.
Describe your style in three words?
Noir, easy, free.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Carlos Santana when he played in my hometown. This was the first gig and it was so mind-blowing for me as a kid, who never used to see artists playing live before. I just recently had started to play the guitar so he was really a thing to me.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Prince and Bowie, they will forever be my heroes.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Post-punk, hip-hop, funk, soul and jazz. When I was young I've been always really into Brit subculture, loved the free spirit and bold style. After years I discovered more inspiration and depth in the music of jazz, funk and soul.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Prince is really special to me and to meet him and talk or jam together would have probably been the most incredible experience.
Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
I just played my first gigs recently in Hamburg and Cologne and both shows were amazing!
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Scott Walker. Every record from him is just a dream.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Wind Cries Mary' by Jimi Hendrix. When I heard Jimi Hendrix for the first time, I was just fascinated and completely taken by his incredible music, the result was me learning how to play guitar. I know this sounds like a cliché. Despite being left-handed, I didn’t have the money for a left-handed guitar so I had to start on
a right-handed one. I was so motivated and definitely idolised Jimi for also being left-handed and playing on a right-handed guitar. This fact really made me push the boundaries.
A song that defines the teenage you?
I don’t have a special song that defines my teenage years, but I was really into the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 OST.
One record you would keep forever?
'What´s Going On' by Marvin Gaye.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
The lyrics from 'Construcao' by Chico Buarque hits different. Chico Buarque is a musician from Brazil who gained popularity due to his unique sound style, which always put me in a good mood. With 'Construcao' he just did something different. 'Construcao' was dark, dramatic and chaotic. For me, as a musician, it is always admirable when the artist creates something totally different from
the audience's expectations. This entire album is just a masterpiece and was a huge inspiration for my second EP.
A song you wished you had written?
'Second Skin' by The Chameleons.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Move On Up' by Curtis Mayfield.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'The WORLD' by Nightmare (Death Note Theme).
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' by The Smiths.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'So What' by Miles Davis.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
Right now not so much into bands, but I just found a compilation about the psychedelic rock sound of South Korea from 1958 – 1974 which is really cool.
