Musicians — Tunbridge Wells
A Lady Bird Photo
Name, where are you from?
Joe, Alex and Don from Royal Tunbridge Wells.
Describe your music in three words?
Post monk punk.
What's the best show you've been to?
Don: Prince at Koko, he played for nearly 4 hours with his band, then came out for a solo piano set... climatic moment was 'How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore’.
Joe: Me and Alex used to go see Don play in bands when we were like 14, cos he was a bit older. Bareface nights were special. Time Machine's a banger - I'm not sure you can hear it anywhere other than on record now.
If you could be on a lineup with any two bands in history who would it be?
Don: Someone like GG Allin, as he was probably the most unpredictable entertainer to ever live. Listen to 'Unpredictable' (brace yourself!).
Alex: One of Don's all-time faves is Freddie Mercury, and I'd pay to see his face if he got announced on the same bill. The Libertines in the early days would be a good crack I reckon.
What subcultures have influenced you?
Don: We all wished we could skate. All given it a good go and played our fair share of Tony Hawk.
Alex: I might romanticise it a bit, but the attitudes that were around at the end of the '70s and the music and art that came from it have always interested me. The Jam, Alternative TV. All fascinating to me.
Joe: Big Cat Week on the BBC.
If you could spend an hour with anyone in history?
Don: It would have to be Josei Toda, his concept of Human Revolution is the basis of our lives together.
Of all the venues you've played, which is your favourite?
Don: Our favourite venue will always be The Tunbridge Wells Forum because it's our local independent music venue and it brought us up along with many others.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Joe: Jason Dorman, the fella who runs The Forum. His band as well, Joeyfat, are relentlessly relevant and do everything just for the sound.
Alex: Yeah I'd say Jason. Anyone who gives everything to what they believe in. Check out their tune 'Valreas Villard de Lans (180km)'. It's built around one note, and the build-up is intense.
Lady Bird are a unique three-piece punk act whose music blends the storytelling approach of The Streets and Ian Dury, with the guitar-driven energy of Blur. They were also the first artist to be signed by Slaves to their independent label Girl Fight Records.
Lady Bird recently released the visuals for to their latest track 'Got Lucky', which you can watch below.
First track you played on repeat?
'One Love' by Blue.
A tune that represents the teenage you?
'One Love' by Blue.
One record you will keep forever?
Paul Simon's 'Graceland'.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Don't wanna be an American Idiot,
One nation controlled by the media."
From 'American Idiot' by Greenday. When we first listened to this we were too young to fully understand what it was talking about, and yet it felt the same listening to it then as it does now. That's what it's about. Getting through to people on all levels.
A song you wish you had written?
'Higher Ground' by Stevie Wonder.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Slide Away' by Oasis.
A song people wouldn't expect you to like?
Don: 'Think Twice' by Celine Dion.
Joe: 'Gorgeous' by Taylor Swift.
Alex: 'Heaven Must Have Sent You' by The Elvins.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Baby Come On' by Sex O'Clock.
Any emerging bands you are listening to?
It's a good time for British Music. The pop charts are alright. In our car right now it's Dream Wife, The Rhythm Method, Shame. Whenyoung's new single is sick. Life and Idles were a big part of last year. Shout out also to Chronnix from Spanish Town. Jamaica is smashing it!!
