Name, where are you from?
We are LUMER and we are all from Hull - though we all individually reside along different parts of the glorious M62.
Describe your style in three words?
All Mod (I)cons.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I cannot be sure as the best gig I have ever been to. However, there was a great lineup at Mabgate Bleach in Leeds where Autosuggestion, L.D Moses, Powerplant and Marbled Eye played. I personally loved every moment of that night, it was such a colossus lineup and rather drunken affair.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
I’m speaking on behalf of the group but I think we would all agree on both The Birthday Party and The Fall. Imagine a dressing room with Mark E, Nick Cave, Rowland S Howard and us lot. It would certainly be an interesting dynamic and I’m not sure where our starstruck modesty would really fit in.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
We’re really inspired by a number of subcultures. I think the main two are the original mod culture of the sixties and the punk/post-punk of the late seventies, including the mod-revival. I think the whole mindset and clothing for both of these was great growing up. It influenced the way I dressed and of course, the music that got us playing our music.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Leonard Cohen. Simply because he’s probable the greatest songwriter who lived and I’d imagine he’d utter words of wisdom with every phrase that left his mouth.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
The New Adelphi Club in Hull, we’ve all spent most of our teenage years there and it was probably our first experience of real bands playing real music. It was also where we all played our first shows in a number of embarrassingly named groups. Other than that, The Deaf Institute in Manchester is somewhat of a magical place to see a band.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Serge Gainsbourg. I think he often gets overlooked as someone who sings cheesy French songs but when you really delve in he has an amazing catalogue of catchy tunes and hooks. Not to mention he’s cool as f*ck.

The first track you played on repeat?
I (Alex) would have to say Latest Flame (Marie’s the Name) by Elvis. I grew up with a mother obsessed with him and therefore that kind of rubbed off on me at an early age. I’d stick this three-part CD collection I got for Christmas on every morning and dance on my bed as if I was The King (now I am).
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Nerve Endings' by Eagulls. We had a playlist written to a CD in Ben's car and it always came on. Reminds me of them late-night drives coming back from practice.
One record you would keep forever?
'Under Colour of Official Right' by Protomartyr. Pretty sure we said this last time. At least we've stuck to our guns. Undeniably an amazing album we all adore.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"The North will rise again"
From 'The NWRA' by The Fall. Mark E. Smith. Never have truer words been spoken.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Daddy Cool' by Boney M.
A song you wished you had written?
'Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye' by Leonard Cohen. It's not his most complex song but I just love the structure of it. Probably one of the best songwriters and the most influential to me.
Best song to turn up loud?
'M.P.S.' by Institute. Can't listen to any song by these any quieter than as loud as physically possible.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'900 Miles' by Terry Callier. Absolutely beautiful song.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
We never have all-nighters, strictly in bed by 11pm but say if we ever did, it would maybe be 'I'm On The Outside (Looking In)' by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Hurt by Timi Yuro or maybe In The Jailhouse Now by Jimmie Rodgers
Any new music you are listening to right now?
Automatic, Sweeping Promises, Paul Jacobs, Unschooling, Black Pumas… the list could go on although my tiny mind can't muster the effort to continue.
