Train Driver — London
A Narguis Photo
Name, where are you from?
My name is Narguis I’m from North London, originally from Grenada.
What do you do?
I am a Train Driver.
Describe your style in three words?
Classic, Sporty, Chic.
Which music defines the teenage you?
I have always loved music and growing up in the Caribbean I was influenced by a variety of genres, mostly R&B, Soul, Gospel, Soca/Calypso and Reggae/Dancehall.
A British icon or band who inspire your sound?
Elton John. What more can I say... A British icon and legend!
What has been your all-time favourite gig?
My all-time favourite gig has to be Machel Montano (Soca artist) when he performed a special show at the Tricycle Theatre back in 2012. The atmosphere was electric! His performance is always powerful and energetic and I remember being right at the front of the stage having a wicked time dancing to some of my favourite songs like, 'It’s Carnival', 'Bottle of Rum', 'Band of The Year' to name a few. Soca music is a huge part of the Caribbean culture, especially during carnival. The vibes, rhythm, energy and togetherness of the people is like no other and it’s something everyone should experience.
What was the first song you played on repeat?
'To Love You More' by Celine Dion. I remember writing down the lyrics and singing in the mirror with my hairbrush.
A song from your favourite album?
'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' is such a great album and over twenty years on it still sounds current today. It’s hard to choose just one... 'To Zion', 'Everything is Everything' and 'Tell Him'!
A song you wish you’d written?
'Who The Cap Fit' by Bob Marley.
What is the last piece of music you bought?
'Rock Your Body' by Burna Boy. I’m really into Afrobeats at the moment thanks to this song. I know this style of music has been around for some time but this song got me hooked.
Best song to bring people together?
'One Love' by Bob Marley. Who does not love Bob Marley! A true legend whose music is loved by people all over the world and this song, no matter the situation, could really bring people together. His music and positive vibes resonates with everyone and still sounds relevant in 2021!
Best love song of all time?
Oh this is a tough one! There are so many, from Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Whitney, Anita Baker, Toni Braxton to name a few, it’s hard to choose one. I’ll have to choose, 'Spend My Life With You' by Eric Benet ft. Tamia and the classic, 'Tonight I Celebrate My Love' by Peabo Bryson ft. Roberta Flack. Both very beautiful.
A song that brings people together?
'All Night Long' by Lionel Richie. There is a very multicultural, feel good vibe to this song that will get everyone together. Classic!
Is there a song you like that people wouldn’t expect?
I love, 'One Day Like This' by Elbow from the album 'The Seldom Seen Kid'. It’s a fantastic album and I don’t think people would expect me to like it.
What new music/bands are you listening to?
I’m not listening to anything new at the moment just a mix of genres and artists: 'Hallelujah' by Burna Boy, 'Slow Down' by H.E.R. (ft. Skip) Marley, 'My Oasis' by Sam Smith (ft. Burna Boy) and 'La Gozadera' by Gente De Zona (ft. Marc Anthony).
