A Rimon Photo
Name, where are you from?
Rimon, Amsterdam.
Describe your style in three words?
Comfort. Colours. Paradox.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Erykah Badu at Afropunk in New York. It was so magical, I almost cried.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
One of them would be Bob Marley and the Wailers.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
Hip-Hop. Definitely. I listen to it a lot and I recognise myself in the way they live, the way they approach certain things, dress, talk, dance. The whole culture is something that influenced me and that I felt really close to.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Nefertiti.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
It’s hard. The Amsterdam show (in Paradiso) was sold out and I received a lot of love and people that I knew were there as well. London (in the Courthouse Theatre) was different because I just said: ‘f*ck it, it’s the last show.’ I felt way more comfortable, doing whatever. I would say London.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Nina Simone and Erykah Badu.
Amsterdam's rising star Rimon released her debut EP 'BBYGIRL FOCU$' in November 2018. Stream or purchase it at platoon.lnk.to/BBYGIRL-FOCUS.
The first track you played on repeat?
‘Just a Dream’ by Nelly. I didn’t even have a boyfriend but I liked someone and he didn’t like me. I was young and I was so sad and replayed this song over and over again and cried. This is so corny.
A song that defines the teenage you?
I used to listen to a lot of The Weeknd. His first mixtapes. It was kind of dark and I was having a bit of a rough time in my teenage years as well. I would say the whole 'Trilogy' album because it’s very melancholic.
One record you would keep forever?
‘Channel Orange’ by Frank Ocean.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
In ‘Pink Matter’, when Frank Ocean refers to a vagina without using the word ‘vagina’, but through using metaphors like ‘Majin Buu’. That’s when I thought: "this man is really amazing". It inspired me to think of what I’m saying through writing, to not just have basic lyrics but to think about them. Lyrics with layers.
A song you wished you had written?
This is going to sound corny as well, but Frank Ocean again. I would say ‘Nights’.
Best song to turn up loud?
‘Mo Bamba’ by Sheck Wes.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
I used to like songs by The Smiths.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
Right now? Lil Baby x Gunna ‘Drip Too Hard’.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
A J Dilla beat, to relax. It shouldn’t be a turn-up song because that will make you want to go back to the dancefloor again.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
I don’t really listen to bands, but from groups – definitely Brockhampton.
