A Snake Eyes Photo
Name, where are you from?
Jim Heffy (Snake Eyes lead vocals and guitar) residing in Brighton.
Nicole Gill (Snake Eyes bass and vocals) from Woking.
Thomas Coe-Brooker (Snake Eyes drummer and vocals) residing in Hastings.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
J: It’s a tough one but Tame Impala at Bestival 2015 was a pretty mental experience. The Computers at the Boileroom in Guildford was also unforgettable.
N: The 1975 in Brighton.
T: Phwoar, started with a hard one! As a knee jerk, I watched Eminem from the top of the sound tower thingy at Leeds festival the other year. I’d never seen him before, was with one of my best mates, the sound was incredible, the endless sea of people beneath us was wild and it was just super nostalgic and fun. That’s up there for me for sure.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands or artists in history?
J: Courtney Barnett and The Wytches I reckon. Two of my faves.
N: Nirvana, Led Zeppelin.
T: I reckon Snake Eyes, The Hives and Nirvana would make a pretty wild show.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
J: Not sure if they were subcultures anymore by the time I got involved but skateboarding was obviously a big thing for me and my mates when I was growing up and I feel like rock music went hand in hand with it. Was never a good skater but enjoyed it all the same.
N: I would say I’m equal parts punk and hippy with a very light dusting of chav.
T: Skateboarding as I hit my teens for sure, then as I traversed them, hardcore and punk. The balance of camaraderie/family, passion and the DIY ethic of those cultures, in particular, have been super significant to me.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
J: He’s still kicking about but would be super wild to meet Jack White to do a tour of third man records.
N: Probably, Anne Boleyn.
T: Jeff Buckley strikes me as an interesting character. Would love to pick his brain on his approach to songwriting.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
J: The Frog and Fiddle in Cheltenham is a favourite but Green Door Store in Brighton has our hearts I think.
N: Proud in Camden is always a good night.
T: Big love to the Green Door Store in Brighton, always. Other than that, Kony Island in Leipzig blew my mind. It was a proper cultural hub, basketball hoops, skate ramps, oil drum bbq’s, a record distro... incredible.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
J: Don’t think they’re unsung, to be honest but Courtney Barnett is defo my number one. Also, the cat playing the piano on youtube don’t get enough credit… always bust out that little number in soundcheck.
N: Syd Barrett.
T: Stephen Dillon. Talented musician, passionate music fan/programmer/crew member and pivotal character in my music scene growing up. May he rest in power.
The first track you played on repeat?
J: Maybe, 'Buck Rodgers' by Feeder.
N: 'In The End' by Linkin Park.
T: '(Pretty Fly) For A White Guy' by The Offspring.
A song that defines the teenage you?
J: I’d like to say something cool like 'Icky Thump' by The White Stripes but it’s probably something more like 'Sugar, We’re Going Down' by Fall Out Boy. I was the worst.
N: Same answer as before I think! 'In The End' by Linkin Park.
T: 'Wake The Dead' by Comeback Kid.
One record you would keep forever?
J: 'Racecar Is Racecar Backwards' by Reuben.
N: 'Dark Side of The Moon' by Pink Floyd.
T: 'In Rainbows' by Radiohead.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
J: “Sports!"
From 'Sports!' by Dream Wife.
N: “I’ve always been mad, very hard to explain why you’re mad"
From 'Breathe' by Pink Floyd.
T: “I wanna be, something that’s of worth you see, and I wanna fly like a kite in the sky"
From 'High As A Kite' by Weezer.
A song you wished you had written?
J: 'Sports' by Dream Wife.
N: 'The Great Gig In The Sky’ by Pink Floyd haha.
T: 'Unfinished Sympathy' by Massive Attack or 'Fix You' by Coldplay.
Best song to turn up loud?
J: 'Get Off' by Metz.
N: 'Animals' by Architects.
T: The only correct answer to this is 'Song 2' by Blur.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
J: Everyone probably likes it cos it’s a rager but 'Feels Right' by Biig Piig.
N: 'Baby Shark' by Pinkfong...
T: I’m kinda known for loving everything so this isn’t a great question for me. I’ll argue 'til the ends of the earth that 'Somebody That I Used To Know' by Gotye is one of the greatest pop songs of all time though.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
J: Anything by Jamiroquai
.
N: 'Crazy In Love' by Beyoncé.
T: 'Let’s Dance' by David Bowie. Never a more apt song name!
Best song to end an all-nighter?
J: 'You Said' by Fontaines D.C… get everyone crying before bed.
N: Probably something chill like 'Together Till It Ends' by EMBRZ.
T: The 'Black Cascade' record by Wolves In The Throne Room - sounds weird but I find ambient black metal super soothing to unwind to.
Any new music you are into at the moment?
J: Loving local legends Gender Roles and CLT DRP, and Bad Nerves.
N: I’m a big fan of Bob Vylan.
T: Here's a few for ya...Kahlla, Oversized, James and The Cold Gun, Out Of Love and Crashface are all lovely people throwing it all into their art right now. Sad Night Dynamite is doing something really fresh and exciting right now, so are Rachel Chinouriri and KAM-BU. We played a show with Deijuvhs recently and their energy was dope. They’ve been around a few years now, but Holy Fawn is a band that I’m unbelievably excited to see where they go next!
