Musician — Sendai
A A Virgin Photo
Name, where are you from?
A Virgin, Sendai (Northeast Japan).
What do you do?
Musician.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Napalm Death. It’s not about music taste, it’s impact. Apart from me, I felt like the rest of the crowd were all blokes. It was all very sweaty (lol). I saw them when I was nineteen or twenty at the EARTHDOM in Shin-Okubo, but I don’t know if it was the original band or not. I also saw The Raincoats, around the same time. That was in Shimokitazawa BASEMENTBAR. I went with a friend who wore a raincoat to the gig, and I remember they got it signed. That was my lasting impression.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
It’s hard to pick out a favourite, so I’ll choose venues that I like and had a good time at. In my band days, I enjoyed Yah Yah’s in Melbourne. After going solo, the @pp_momoko love hotel event at GALAXY Gingakei in Jingumae (Tokyo) was a lot of fun. My stage was a bed and we are planning to do a similar event again. I also enjoyed the shows at THREE and SPREAD in Shimokitazawa because I performed under lighting by Hitoshi Sato.
If you could be on the line up with any bands in history?
A huge band would be fun. Perhaps The Jesus and Mary Chain. It would be cool to join as a female vocalist - like Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval did on the track 'Sometimes Always'. I’d like it to be around 1994 when that track came out and join on guitar and vocals. I’d want the venue to be in Japan, so I’ll say LIQUIDROOM in Ebisu.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I’m learning the drums now, so I’d love to have Ringo Starr teach me how to play. It would be the Ringo from the 'Candy' film era. It’d be cool to do it at NOAH, the local practice studio I go to.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Napalm Death. Because I’ve seen them live. I say that, but I don’t really know much about them.
The first track you played on repeat?
The song coming to me right now is 'Typical Girls' by The Slits. That’s because I used to be in a band with other girls and The Slits were all female. I watched the music video on repeat, too. I joined a band when I was around twenty and it was the first time for me to play an instrument. I was a pretty late starter.
A song that defines the teenage you?
I think 'Helter Skelter' by The Beatles. It was the only song I could play on guitar.
One record you would keep forever?
I don’t own much music, so if I have to choose from my collection, I would have to say … the movie soundtrack to 'Christiane F. – Wir Kinder Vom Bahnhof Zoo'. It’s based on a true story and it’s full of David Bowie.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
Inspiring lyrics? … Lyrics. When I write lyrics myself, I’m choosing words based on the sound. I like the British English pronunciation of “what”. Sounds like “Wha!” Does that count?
Best song to turn up loud?
'Wonderwall' by Oasis. Because they use it in the film, 'Mummy'. I love the fact they weren’t shy about using such a famous song on the soundtrack. And it comes in with such a brilliant punch. I loved the song after seeing that film.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Wannabe' by Spice Girls. It’s the only song of theirs I know, but the music video is amazing. I sometimes stick it on first thing in the morning.
