A Grandmas House Photo
Name, where are you from?
We are Grandmas House (Yas, Poppy and Zoe) and we’re based in Bristol!
Describe your style in three words?
Music: Sweaty, frantic, raw.
Fashion: Androgynous, baggy, SUITS.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Shame and Fontaines D.C. at SWX in Bristol. Two very good bands that have musically inspired us a lot. It was an AMAZING atmosphere and we lost each other in the mosh pit which is always a good sign.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands or artists in history?
We would LOVE to play alongside Joan Jett and The Blackhearts! When we first started playing our instruments their songs were the first we learnt plus Joan Jett is just punk goals. Also Courtney Barnett! She really inspires us lyrically - imagine all of that in one night it would be ICONIC.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
Post-punk for sure especially bands part of the riot grrrl movement in the '90s such as Bikini Kill, Sleater Kinney and Bratmobile and any band that involves cool girls shouting to be fair. We also love and are inspired by disco and pop and love incorporating aspects of those genres in our music.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Vivienne Westwood would be so interesting to have a chat with. She really helped shape punk fashion back in the '70s and just seems like an all-round wise woman.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
One of our favourite venues we’ve been to is the Windmill Brixton, we love what they do for new underground artists and our favourite venue we’ve played is probably The Old England in Bristol. Good, sweaty vibes in there.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Kah-lo!! We went to see her in London after getting obsessed with her music and we couldn’t believe how small the venue she was playing at was. She’s doing absolute BITS.
The first track you played on repeat?
Y: 'Grace Kelly' by Mika.
Z: 'Pure Morning' by Placebo.
P: 'Dancing In The Dark' by Bruce Springsteen.
A song that defines the teenage you?
Y: 'Cosmic Dancer' by T. Rex.
Z: 'Teenagers' by My Chemical Romance.
P: 'Lovestory' by Taylor Swift.
One record you would keep forever?
Y: 'Demon Days' by Gorillaz.
Z: 'Illinois' by Sufjan Stevens.
P: 'Stranger in the Alps' by Phoebe Bridgers.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
Y: “But there's a full moon risin'
Let's go dancin' in the light
We know where the music's playin'
Let's go out and feel the night”
From 'Harvest Moon' by Neil Young.
Z: “Who will love a little Sparrow
Who's travelled far and cries for rest?”
From 'Sparrow' by Simon and Garfunkel All the lyrics have always stuck in my mind.
P: “Everyone I know is funny, but jokes don’t make us money, sell our rage, buy and trade, but we still cry for free everyday” and “my desire is contagious”
From 'Can I Go On' by Sleater Kinney.
A song you wished you had written?
Y: 'Zombie' by The Cranberries or 'Come Around' by M.I.A.
Z: 'Fast Car' by Tracy Chapman.
P: 'Not' by Big Thief.
Best song to turn up loud?
Y: 'Du Hast' by Rammstein and 'Sexy Boy' by Air.
Z: 'Killing In The Name' by Rage Against The Machine.
P: 'The Whole Of The Moon' by The Waterboys.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
Y: 'Starz In Their Eyes' by Just Jack.
Z: 'Boss Bitch' by Doja Cat.
P: 'Low' by Flo Rida ft. T-Pain.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
Y: 'Get Busy' by Sean Paul.
Z: 'Toxic' by Britney Spears.
P: 'WAP' by Cardi B ft. Megan Thee Stallion (when clubs open again).
Best song to end an all-nighter?
Y: 'Chiquitita' by ABBA.
Z: 'Praise You' by Fat Boy Slim.
P: 'Why Do You Feel So Down' by Declan McKenna.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
Y: Grove, a fellow Bristol artist is doing absolute bits at the moment. Been listening to their track 'Black' on repeat!
Z: I’ve recently discovered Arlo Parks so been listening to her new album a lot. Especially loving 'Green Eyes' at the moment.
P: Discovered a new band called Lime, 'Fever' is a TUNE.
