03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Jessica Winter from Hayling Island.

Describe your style in three words?
Suit Suit Suit.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
The greatest gig I ever went to was when I was 13, I was fresh off the ferry from Hayling Island with the world at my feet and Eminem was playing in Milton Keynes. Everything about the gig was mind-blowing, I saw a man’s penis, got lost in the woods and knew from that day on that this was the life for me.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Barbara Streisand and Kanye West.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I will always be influenced from the DIY Punks, my very first memories of live music would be watching my uncle playing bass in his punk band Archive 45 in some falling down pub in Portsmouth and more importantly they still do. The energy that this culture creates on stage and off is something I hold with me whenever I play or write.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Well, my mind goes straight to Hitler but that would be very awkward because of my Jewish heritage so I’m going to go with Isambard Kingdom Brunel to talk about steam trains.

Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
To be honest a lot of my favourite venues are closed down now but recently some friends of mine built a stage on a boat for Extinction Rebellion which I performed on the other day so maybe that’s the way forward, boats as venues - it changes laws!

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Laurie Anderson. Her album covers are always an inspiration to me.

Jessica is a musician, writer and DIY producer; having worked with the likes of Fat White Family, Gorillaz, The Horrors, Ho99o9 and Dinosaur Pile-up. She is also part of the creative driving force behind South London outfit Pregoblin, alongside Alex Sebley.
