A Laima Photo
Name, where are you from?
I am Laima, born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, based in London.
Describe your style in three words?
Minimal, black and oversized.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
The Chemical Brothers, I am not too sure if it's the one best gig, but every time I see them live it's emotional and deep.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Laurie Anderson and Marina Abramovich because I trust their work and relate to them, also because they are amazing female artists.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Contemporary Performance Art/Art Sound/Film Art - because I love works that do not have boundaries in-between forms of Art. Indie Electronic Music from the early 2000s - because that is the scene where I come from, where I first performed and learnt so much.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Artist and Director Alejandro Jodorowski because it feels like he is “God on Earth” and his teachings are always amazing. I would like him to know of my existence and how I feel about his work.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
This is a hard one, I keep all the venues close to my heart as they are always so welcoming and generous to me as an artist, but at the moment I have to favourite the four homes where I have performed my last album before lockdown. Three in London and one in Manchester.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Maria Sabina, the mushroom healer from Mexico because I feel it is important to learn the functionality of music for healing, music which is not westernized or to be sung in a popular radio context. I love medicine music and she is the master of it.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Summertime Rolls' by Janes Addiction.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Man In the Box' by Alice in Chains.
One record you would keep forever?
'Abbey Road' by The Beatles.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
'Isn't It a Pity' by George Harrison/Nina Simone.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'House Nation' by Housemaster Boyz.
A song you wished you had written?
'All My Friends' - LCD Soundsystem.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Dr Blair' by PetBrick.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Wiser Time' by Black Crowes.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'I Can't Go For That' by Hall and Oates.
