A La La Photo
Name, where are you from?
Lauren Elizabeth Andrew, La La, friends call me La. Born in Glasgow, Scotland!
Describe your style in three words?
Conflicting, comfortable, feminine.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
J. Cole in Glasgow in 2011 is up there! He supported Drake, as in, the opening act and I was just completely blown away. It was in the Carling Academy which is now the o2 I’m sure, 2,500 capacity for Drake? Imagine now! I walked away from that night with a completely new artist to dig through - that’s what I love about music there is always always something new to learn or someone new to discover - I went to see Drake but I left completely sold on J. Cole.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands or artists in history?
Faithless, the Reverence album will always feel like what in hindsight was probably the gateway to my love of this amazing part of the music industry - I always hate to categorise it as 'house' but what is widely known as that - my Dad was a massive fan. I was from the first time I heard them. I don't think I fully appreciated the music the way I do now but I remember feeling something entirely different first listening to Faithless. 'Insomnia' will always hold a very special place! And Lil Louis' - another life-changing gig was seeing him play at Sub Club's birthday party, that set changed the way I played then and even now - it was an education in so so many ways - I took so much from that night and 'I Called U (The Conversation)' is one of my favourite records of all time.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
I would say I am influenced by most things; some slight, some aggressively. I suppose subconsciously or not I take a little something everywhere I look. I don't actually like categorizing style or genres in general because I find it hard to box things off to be one definite thing.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
My papa, Jim Andrew - I have so many questions I would love to ask him - he was a Jazz musician and the best man I've ever had in my life; one more hour I would adore to have.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
DC10 - Circoloco, which I've now had the honour of playing myself - there is something so special about that space and the people behind the night. It's hard to put into words.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Manami - I’m a huge fan of hers, she’s a talented selector and I really love this punchy belter she put out called 'Plastic Italo', she’s the most artist imo.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Inner Smile' by Texas, my mum's favourite.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'I Know Where It's At' by All Saints, my first album was 'Pure Shores'! I queued at HMV for an hour for it :)
One record you would keep forever?
'Take Me to the Bridge' by Vera - cried the first time I heard it!
A song lyric that has inspired you?
'Another Brick In The Wall, Pt. 2' by Pink Floyd.
A song you wished you had written?
'Has It Come To This' by The Streets.
Best song to turn up loud?
'This Must Be The Place' by Talking Heads.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Something Got Me Started' by Simply Red.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Blue Monday' by New Order.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Smalltown Boy' by Bronski Beat or 'Dance For Me' by Mary J. Blige.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
Molchat Doma - most interesting music I've heard in ages!
