DJ — Japan
A Ryo Fukawa Photo
Name
Ryo Fukawa / ROCKETMAN.
What do you do?
DJ
Where are you from?
Tokyo, Japan
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
It was João Gilberto’s first Japan gig at Tokyo International Forum in 2003. The gig started 40~50 minutes late as expected, but I literally felt like I had seen the god.
Which sub-cultures have influenced you?
'SHUKAN SHONEN JUMP (Japanese weekly comic magazine)'. JUMP has a reader’s column called 'JUMP HOSOKYOKU' and its contexts are mainly nonsense but I enjoy it a lot.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
A hotel in Tokyo for my friend’s wedding party. Guests consisted of men and women of various ages, and I DJ'd on my own throughout the event. I have DJ'd three wedding parties so far, and I would like to try at a funeral one day.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I would like to listen to recent music with Beethoven. I’m really interested in how a great composer like him feels when he listens to music nowadays, like EDM.
The first track you played on repeat?
I listened to both Classical Music and The Beatles. I listened to 'Lady Madonna' a lot from The Beatles and I also liked 'The Girl with the Flaxen Hair (La fille aux cheveux de lin)' from when I was learning to play the piano.
A song that defines the teenage you?
Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No.17 'The Tempest' - Part 3. Very thoughtful as I was agonized at that time. One more, 'A Summer Place' by Percy Faith And His Orchestra. I really can’t choose just one of these two. They are the starting points for lounge music to me.
One record you would keep forever?
'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' by The Beatles which I've bought for the first time, It also has my favourite song 'A Day In The Life' on it.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
I chose two songs rather from the titles than the lyrics. They are 'You Get What You Give' by the New Radicals and 'Tears Dry On Their Own' by Amy Winehouse.
