Name, where are you from?
Hello!! I’m SOFY, I grew up in Leicestershire but I’m now based in London.
Describe your style in three words?
Colourful, playful and chill.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Jamie T at Brixton - the way Jamie commands an audience is so brilliant because he has so much charisma, everyone was hanging off his every word and it really inspired me to bring personality to my live set.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Easy Life and Amy Winehouse. Easy Life because I think our vibes would compliment each other really well and their live sets are so much fun, and Amy purely out of selfishness because I never got to see her live and I think she’s one of the most phenomenal artists ever.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Britpop. I grew up listening to a lot of Britpop bands because my parents were super into it - I actually found out recently that they were at that iconic Oasis Knebworth show which made me SO jealous. So yeah, I’ve sort of always had a soft spot for it - Oasis, Blur, Pulp, The Stone Roses - stuff like that. I love the fact that it’s quite boisterous and fun without taking itself too seriously, and I also love how well the music translates to a live setting. So yeah, I’m all about bringing back Britpop but with a bit of a fresh twist and some female energy.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I’d love to go for a pint with Richard Ashcroft - there’s this amazingly chaotic video of him on BBC Breakfast that my band and I are obsessed with, he just doesn’t give a sh*t and it’s so funny. I bet he has some amazing stories.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
So far it’s the Sebright Arms in Bethnal Green - it really pops off down there and gets very sweaty which is fun, and it feels super intimate as the stage is really low and close to the crowd. It’s also just down the road from my flat which is a bonus.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
I’m not sure if she really counts as unsung because everyone loves her, but I am absolutely in awe of Emily Eavis. It’s my biggest dream to play at Glastonbury, and I think to have built something like that that has inspired so many people is just incredible. She’s also such a huge advocate for female representation at festivals which is something that is super important to me, she’s just an all round legend.

The first track you played on repeat?
'Changes' by David Bowie. My mum is a massive Bowie fan and we used to listen to this in the car on the way to school when I was a kid - it’s the first song I remember really falling in love with.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Make My Sun Shine' by Swim Deep - this whole album is pure nostalgia for me, but this track in particular takes me right back to being sixteen. It’s still a staple for me and my housemate haha.
One record you would keep forever?
The Stone Roses eponymous first album.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
It’s gotta be Lily Allen rhyming "Tesco" with "Alfresco" in 'LDN' haha. Her lyricism is so playful and funny it really inspires me to just think outside the box a bit when I’m writing lyrics, which is my absolute favourite part of this whole music thing.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Street Talkin' by Slick Rick and OutKast.
A song you wished you had written?
'Eugene' by Arlo Parks.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Girls & Boys' by Blur.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Ordinary World' by Duran Duran. It’s been one of my favourite songs since I was really little. I still remember the first time I ever heard it, I think I was about seven or eight and I found it on my dad’s computer - I can vividly remember being absolutely mesmerized by the riff in the chorus and I’ve loved it ever since.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'7AM' by Hak Baker. I saw Hak perform this at Village Underground last year and it was wicked - it always reminds me of sitting around at an afters with my mates in our uni house so it feels super nostalgic.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Bedtime Story' by Priestgate.
'Feels Like Rain' by Theo Bleak.
'joyride' by Mysie.
'YETI' by Distance Learning.
