A Sophie Hunger Photo
Name, where are you from?
Sophie Hunger, Berlin.
Describe your style in three words?
Short French dresses combined with a black jacket and heavy black shoes.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Air on their Safari Tour in 1999. I had never heard real songs, with emotional verses and melodies and hooks but played with electronics and filtered voices before.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Big Thief and Radiohead.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
The folk tradition of my home country Switzerland and later in life the electronic music scene in Berlin.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Simone de Beauvoir, she defined ethics of freedom that I see as a dogma for my life. “A freedom which is interested only in denying freedom must be denied. And it is not true that the recognition of the freedom of others limits my own freedom: to be free is not to have the power to do anything you like; it is to be able to surpass the given towards an open future; the existence of others as a freedom defines my situation and is even the condition of my own freedom. I am pressed if I am thrown into prison, but not if I am kept from throwing my neighbour into prison”.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
The House of Blues in New Orleans. I did the opening act there in 2012 for the band Tinariwen. The crowd just echoed every single note we played and sang as if they were part of the band and on top of it they clapped on 2 and 4 with perfect timing!
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Delia Derbyshire who kind of invented a lot of early days electronic music and is widely known for her music to Dr Who.

Sophie Hunger released her new album 'Halluzinationen' in September 2020. It was her second collaboration with producer Dan Carey of Speedy Wunderground and was recorded at Abbey Road's Studio 2.

The first track you played on repeat?

A song that defines the teenage you?
'If I Ruled The World (Imagine That)' by Nas ft Lauryn Hill.
One record you would keep forever?
'Zitilites' by Kashmir.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
'Snow Song' by Adrianne Lenker.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Whatta Man' by Salt-N-Pepper.
A song you wished you had written?
'Paul' by Big Thief.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Gegen' by Paula Temple.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'How Will I Know' by Whitney Houston.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'You’ve Got A Friend - Live' by Donny Hathaway.
Any new music you are listening to right now?

'Take Back The Radio' by Katy J Pearson.
