A The Mute Group Photo
Name, where are you from?
The Mute Group, Nashville.
Describe your style in three words?
An unwritten operetta.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Philip Glass Ensemble at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville 2007.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands or artists in history?
Isaac Hayes and The Velvet Underground (we feel like we fall somewhere in between Black Moses-era Hayes and the VU).
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
Eastern Orthodox hymnography and chant (Zack is an Orthodox Christian and a trained Byzantine chanter).
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Limiting this to musicians; it's too much otherwise. Richie Havens.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
We love the East Room in East Nashville, TN.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Roots Manuva. He's such a balanced producer and one of the smartest, most sincere writers out there; plus his name is Rodney, and we have a strong attraction to that name.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Country Feedback' by R.E.M. or 'Hearing Aid' by They Might Be Giants.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Get It Together' by Beastie Boys ft. Q-Tip.
One record you would keep forever?
It's a toss-up. Either 'The Who Sell Out' by The Who
OR 'Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome' by Parliament.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"I pray to the almighty
Let me not to him do
As he has unto me
Teach my beloved children
Who have been enslaved
To reach for the light continually"
From 'Slave Song' by Sade.
A song you wished you had written?
'O Superman' by Laurie Anderson'.
Best song to turn up loud?
'It' by Prince.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'I Can Tell' by 504 Boyz.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'1 Thing' by Amerie.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Surf's Up' by The Beach Boys or 'God and Man' by Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
'No Good Rudie' Justin Hinds & the Dominoes. Getting into rocksteady.
