A wych elm Photo
Name, where are you from?
wych elm, Bristol.
Describe your style in three words?
Dead Victorian children - that have just crawled their way out of their graves.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Pixies. I’d been a fan for such a long time so finally seeing them live was incredible. I felt very emotional when they played 'Monkey Gone To Heaven'.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Nirvana (so we could meet Kurt Cobain and hang out with Dave Grohl) and PJ Harvey because she’s inspired lots of our music.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
The grunge scene from the early '90s influences our style and music a lot. I feel like artists from that scene were honest and open about their mental health and it inspired us to be as well.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Amy Winehouse. Would love to just talk to her about her musical inspirations and her life.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
The Louisiana, close to home and gave us gigs when no one else would.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
PJ Harvey. Her first few albums really resonated with me, from the filthy lyrics to the even filthier guitar parts.
wych elm recently released their new single 'Scold's Bridle'. Listen, purchase or stream it via ditto.fm/scolds-bridle.
'Scold's Bridle' is the first to be taken from their upcoming EP 'Rabbit Wench' due for release on 24th September 2021. The EP is available to pre-order now at wychelm.band.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Sunny Afternoon' by The Kinks.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Bitch' by The Vaselines.
One record you would keep forever?
'Velcro Hooks' by Velcro Hooks.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“Damn your chest-beating just you stop your screaming.
All the time he hunting, swimming, fishing, breeding.
Don’t you ever stop and give me time to breathe in?”
From 'Me-Jane' by PJ Harvey.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'People Are Strange' by The Doors.
A song you wished you had written?
'He War' by Cat Power.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Sex Beat' by The Gun Club.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'On nous cache tout, on nous dit ren' by Jacques Dutronc.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Reach Out I’ll Be There' by Four Tops.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
Grandmas House and Langkamer.
