A Finches Photo
Name, where are you from?
That's a tricky question, we met in Hertfordshire at school, but have been a bit all over the place since. Oscar was at Uni up in Edinburgh, and still has a flat there, but spends most of the time on Dan's sofa in Elephant and Castle. Oscar, Dan and their mates have shared whatever crappy house they can find since school. So Hertfordshire, all over London and Edinburgh.
Describe your style in three words?
Doesn’t fit properly.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
O: For me, it was the Libertines, but that's just me.
D: I don’t want to say Death Grips, cause I don’t wanna be that person, but it was so sick, first time I got properly smacked in the face.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
D: Avril Lavigne.
O: Thats not a band…
D: Okay how about The Strokes?
O: Yeah alright, and Paramore.
D: Yep, can’t lie, even seeing them both on the same lineup would make us lose our sh*t, we’ve been obsessed with both of them since school, and have been digging up old CDs recently to listen back to their stuff. They were both phases that never really died, and they influence our music in a big way, we’re always trying to rip them off.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
Indiesleaze, Y2K women’s fashion, (oversized jeans, and crop tops). We were obsessed with the indiesleaze style in school and used to do a horrible impersonation of any 2000s band. I think we went too far with the skinny jeans, had to make up for it with oversized ones now. Pair that with some tops from when we were 13, and you’ve pretty much got it.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
O: My honest answer is Henry the 8th. Don't really know why though.
D: He would not be that interesting to talk to.
O: Yeah he would, shut up, what's yours?
D: I just don’t really care about history, what about Jesus, turn water into wine and that.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
O: Scala in Kings Cross, it's a nice intimate space, and the bands they book are sick.
D: Printworks is just massive and confusing, you can never find your way out.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
D: Dean Blunt, he’s a legend, produced on A$AP Rocky's 'TESTING', but has been around in the music industry for time. His art is sick too. Another one would be Sparklehorse, my vocals are pretty out there and they’re really inspired by him and Elliot Smith.
O: Oscar Chavez, I’m named after him, big legend of Mexican music.
The first track you played on repeat?
O: 'Replay' by Iyaz. Maybe this is a bit too honest, but it's true, I used to bang this on my iPod touch.
D: 'Bedshaped' by Keane. That Keane Album was always in the Car growing up, I couldn’t work out how to change over the CDs so we used to play it on loop on long car journeys.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Cigarettes and Alcohol' by Oasis.
One record you would keep forever?
'Blonde' by Frank Ocean.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"my teas gone cold I'm wondering why, got out of bed at all"
From 'Thank You' by Dido. Big up Dido, we had a six hour pointless argument about this lyric.
A song you wished you had written?
O: 'Foundations' by Kate Nash.
D: 'Toothpaste Kisses' by The Maccabees.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Sleep Sound' by Jamie xx.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'You Give Me Something' by James Morrison.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'I'm Every Woman' by Whitney Houston.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Begin By Letting Go' by Etherwood.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
O: 'Ooooo' by Finches.
D: 'i feel alive woo yeh' by Clammy Hands.
