Tennis Player / Model — Northamptonshire
A Gary Cox Photo
Name, where are you from?
Gary Cox, Northamptonshire.
What do you do?
I play wheelchair tennis and I’m a disabled model.
Describe your style in three words?
Sporty, casual with lots of layers.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I went to see Calvin Harris while at V-Fest. It was insane. The crowd and the music just moved as one.
If you could put any three bands in history on a lineup?
OutKast, Nirvana, Gorillaz.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Drum and bass, especially as a teenager/young adult. I’m more into hip-hop now but will occasionally slip back into DnB during a night out.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Sir Ludwig Guttmann. I would love the opportunity to thank him for establishing the Spinal Games at Stoke Mandeville Hospital (where I did my rehab). These games went on to be called the Paralympic Games.
Where is your favourite independent venue?
Roadmender in Northampton. This was the place to be growing up. Never a bad performer or night out there.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Lucy Spraggan, she has an easy voice and regularly supports local mental health charities in Northamptonshire.
The first track you played on repeat?
'It’s Like That' by Run DMC - probably aged 12 in one of the barns in my father's farm attempting to choreograph a breakdance!
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Bound 4 Da Reload' by Oxide & Neutrino - when I just got my driving license, windows down, volume up. SMH now at that.
One record you would keep forever?
'Bedroom Eyes' by Natty - this tune played on my now wife’s and I’s first date.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Now that that don’t kill me, can only make me stronger"
From 'Stronger' by Kanye West - this song came out a year after I had my car accident and I really needed to hear it at that time of my rehabilitation.
A song you wished you had written?
'Shotgun' by George Ezra - my son loves that song and the amount of times we have listened to it, wow!
Best song to turn up loud?
'Numb / Encore' by Jay Z and Linkin Park.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Cool' by Jonas Brothers - not my usual band but my son loves it and we sing it together trying to out cool each other.
A song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Eye of the Tiger' by Survivor - that intro.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Time of My Life' from Dirty Dancing - cheesy but I have this one mate who always thinks we can do the lift and always end up in a heap on the floor laughing our heads off.
