A Italia 90 Photo
Name, where are you from?
Italia 90, we are all originally from around Brighton but moved to London together 7 years ago. We now live in South East London.
Describe your style in three words?
Daniel Day-Lewis.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
We saw Elton John together at Bestival. We held each other and we wept.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Classic punk support from John Cooper Clarke, Italia 90 main support, Frank Sinatra headline. The guy had pipes.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
S.H.A.R.P, Swing Kids, German Idealism.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Rosa Luxembourg. If she’s not available, then Jamie Oliver so we can smother the b*stard.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
We’ve been lucky recently to play some of our favourite venues like the 100 Club and Shacklewell Arms. But it has to be The Windmill, Brixton. The sound is great, it’s like playing in your living room and it’s the best place in London to see good new bands.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Ari Up - She should be a household name.
Trish Keenan - Broadcast were past their peak in terms of fame when she died but were making their best music.
Julius Eastman – One of the best New York minimalists but died homeless and remains unremembered.
Tommy Ramone – Pioneered a drum style that gets copied to this day and never given recognition despite producing some of the Ramones best stuff.
The first track you played on repeat?
We all used to live together in Whitechapel, and 'Why' by Carly Simon got played a lot.
A song that defines the teenage you?
We were all the perfect age when 'B.Y.O.B.' by System of a Down came out. It still gets played regularly through the P.A at rehearsals.
One record you would keep forever?
The 7” single of 'Nazi Punks F*ck Off' by Dead Kennedys in a clear printed bag is very precious.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"I don’t pay rent and I don’t pay bills ‘cos I spent all the money on the Holsten Pils."
From 'Holsten Pillz' by Pints.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Northern Line' by LV & Joshua Idehen. One for the TFL heads.
A song you wished you had written?
'Spanish Bombs' by The Clash.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Nessun Dorma' by Luciano Pavarotti.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Pure Shores' by All Saints. Quite possibly the best pop single of all time.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Nobody Does It Better' [Glang a lang a lang a lang] by Carly Simon.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Stuck in the Mud' or 'Missing The Old Times' by Ghost Car.
'1000 Speedboats' by Great Dad.
'Honesty' by Fake Laugh.
'Icke' by Mice on Mars.
