A Lloyd Young Photo
Name, where are you from?
Lloyd Young. Originally from '14th worst town in the UK' - Basingstoke, but London based since 2008!
Describe your style in three words?
Worn out tat.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever put on?
Hard to pick but I'd probably have to say it's a tie between Fat White Family in 2013 and SQUID late last year. Both for much the same reason, in that they were both at hugely exciting periods of time for each band. Fat White Family were right on the cusp of their success and I think SQUID are no different. Also, Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard get a special mention for a ridiculously good headline show for me at The Old Blue Last recently!
If you could put on a line up with any two bands in history?
Might seem like a cliche of a choice but I don't really care... Nirvana are my all time favourite band and I wish I was a bit older when they were at their peak. The influence that they had, and still have, both musically and culturally is immeasurable. I wouldn't be doing anything I'm doing now if Nirvana hadn't existed.
I'd flip-flop a lot on a second choice but for now, I'll say Chet Baker. Despite a pretty much endless list of personal issues he still managed to leave a huge mark on Jazz (and music in general)! Plus I'd love to start booking a bit of Jazz as well!
Which subcultures have influenced you?
70's Punk, and the DIY ethos that it birthed.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Billie Holiday! Quite simply the coolest person of all time, and such an important pioneer in so many ways. A genuine free spirit who endured such extreme hardship from so early on in her life, yet still managed to push through and flourish in the ultimate 'mans world' of that era. And above all, she was simply a stunning talent.
What's you're favourite independent venue?
Probably Scala, Kings Cross, London. Seeing a band there always feels particularly special. Like you're witnessing something right before it explodes.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Townes Van Zandt. Not necessarily unsung but still never achieved the success he deserved in his own lifetime. Plus one of the most powerful lyricists you'll ever hear.
Lloyd Young runs Permanent Creeps - a London based label that host clubs and gigs as well as managing bands and releasing records. www.facebook.com/permanentcreeps
The first track you played on repeat?
'Coffee and TV' by Blur.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Hyper Music' by Muse. (Pre-2006 Muse only!)
One record you would keep forever?
'I Put A Spell On You' by Screamin' Jay Hawkins.
A song lyric that has inspired you?}
"When you cast your eyes upon the skylines of this /
Once proud nation /
Can you sense the fear and the hatred /
Growing in the hearts of its population?"
Every single word in 'The Beat(en) Generation' by The The. I don't actually think this song could be any more apt for what this country is going through right now.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'F*ck The Pain Away' by Peaches.
A song you wish your label had released?
'Mother' by IDLES.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Gouge Away' by Pixies.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Tourniquet' by Marilyn Manson.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'I Wanna Be Adored' by The Stone Roses.
Any new bands you are listening to right now?
I think it'd be a bit lame to just pick any bands from my own label, so right now I'd say -
'Handshakes' by Do Nothing.
'Athens, France' by Black Country New Road.
'Bad Blood' by Working Men's Club.
'Under My Skin' by Circe.
