03Interview

Name, where are you from?
J: Jess, Oxford.
B: Balla, Swindon.
R: Rach, Dudley.

What do you do?
J: Bass and vocals.
B: Guitar and vocals.
R: Drums and vocals.

Describe your style in three words?
Sad banger bops.

Describe your style in three words?
J: Hipster Pokémon trainer.
R: Stripes, dungarees, band tees.
B: '90s relaxed streetwear.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
J: Andy Shauf at Shipping Forecast, Liverpool. There were about fifteen people there and it was the most quiet, intimate gig ever.
R: Big Thief at The Ritz Manchester, Phoebe Bridgers at Green Man 2018, Pinegrove in Liverpool Arts Club, Avril Lavigne in Birmingham NIA ('Bones' Tour 2004 lol), Green Day at Birmingham NEC 2009.
B: Tame Impala at Manchester Arena. I saw them on the 'Currents' tour and it was magical!

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
R: The Beatles 'cause it's The Beatles and Ringo is the best drummer and Fleetwood Mac in the '70s. Sort us out a time machine would ya?
J: Also picking The Beatles. Cos The Beatles!
B: Biffy Clyro.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
R: Emo massively when I was a teenager. My Chemical Romance spoke to a deeper part of fifteen year old me lol.
J: Emo, punk, tattoo, Japanese. Wanting to rebel when I was a teenager definitely influenced the things I was drawn to. Traditional American and Japanese tattoo culture and history spoke to my rebellious yet artistic, and humorous side.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
J: Churchill - I like it how he goes “Ahhh yes”.
R: Vlad the Impaler with no impaling devices on his person. See what his problem was.

Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
R: The Lanes in Bristol was pretty great. It's a venue, bowling alley and karaoke bar all in one! The Deaf Institute in Manchester is also one of my favourites 'cause it's so beautiful.
J: Thekla in Bristol is mad. A gig, on a boat, on the river? When I realised the stage was technically below the surface I felt a bit freaked out. And the whole boat rocks when people boogie. St Luke’s in Glasgow is also lovely.
B: I love playing Gorilla in Manchester... we were pretty bummed about the backdrop on stage being relocated but found it at a venue in Birmingham while we were on tour recently.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
R: Zach Levine (drummer of Pinegrove). His playing is so dynamic and I could watch him play 4eva. I did accidentally diss him on his Instagram once though which I was pretty mortified about loool.

Peaness will release their debut album 'World Full of Worry' in May 2022. Pre-order or pre-save it via Ink.to/WorldFullofWorry.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
