A Percy Junior Photo
Name, where are you from?
I’m Percy Junior and I’m from London.
Describe your style in three words?
Work in progress.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
King Krule at Montague Arms in 2016, it was around the tail-end of summer, came as a complete surprise on the day, managed to pull a sicky from my job at Old Blue Last and was the first time seeing him live.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Nirvana and Skepta. Different energies but both tap into a raw energy that I would want from an ideal line up.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
The ethos of the two-tone era is something I align with - I think constantly mixing and matching is key to culture evolving. Bits of punk and rave cultures have definitely seeped in.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history, who would you choose?
Mark Fisher. I wish I had the opportunity to go to a lecture of his or just have a cuppa while he was alive. His critique and cultural commentary is something that resonated very deeply with me.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
Probably Moth Club, played the best we’ve ever played there and it’s such an exuberant venue.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Dean Blunt.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Lovely Day' by Bill Withers.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'The Boy With The Thorn In His Side' by The Smiths.
One record you would keep forever?
'Back to Black' by Amy Winehouse. Timeless and always a satisfying listen.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“Now if I f**k this model / And she just bleached her a**hole / And I get bleach on my T-shirt / I'mma feel like an a**hole”
From 'Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1' by Kanye West. Hear me out on this one. Contextually, I think the way that a line so vulgar and brash suddenly juxtaposes the beautiful, euphoric minute that comes before is incredible. The straight-faced way in which it’s delivered almost makes it seem like an earnest contemplation. The line itself! A character so preoccupied with how he presents that he can’t completely give in to raw primitive desire, because it might f*ck up his t-shirt a little bit, genius. I’d definitely like to explore characters, some comedic, some tragic, and exaggerate things a bit more in future writing. Not every day moaning about something or other.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'So U Kno' by Overmono, hood classic.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Columbia' by Oasis.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'forever' by Charli XCX? Idk if I give off a Charli vibe but I very well could.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Nikes' by Frank Ocean.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Gud Gudbyez' by Nia Archives.
'The Flag Is Raised' by Bladee, Ecco2k
'SAOKO' by Rosalía.
'Poppin' by Yeat.
'Only Seeing God When I Come' by Sega Bodega.
