Musicians — Novosibirsk
A Ploho Photo
Name, where are you from?
Viktor – Novosibirsk, Russia.
Andrey – Novosibirsk, Russia.
Igor - Saint Petersburg, Russia.
What do you do?
V: I write songs, play the guitar and sing in Ploho band.
A: Music is the main part of my life.
I: Synthesizer operator.
Describe your style in three words?
V: Casual, two, three.
A: Classic, sneakers, black.
I: Minimalism. Retro. Black.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
V: Viagra Boys.
A: Joint gig of Earth and Nadja in Moscow, 2015. Earth - Rise to Glory, Nadja’s tracks were hard to define.
I: The Chemical Brothers in Saint Petersburg, 2019.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
V: Punk 77, Rave and Break Beat of the early 90s. I’ve always been attracted to massive subcultural movements. It’s interesting to watch how new trends emerge in youth culture and becomes dominant in a few months.
A: Punk. My first real passion.
I: Retrofuturism.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
V: Jim Morrison of The Doors. Yes, I know that he was an asshole but I’d like to make sure of it myself and sharing this heavy burden with him.
A: Gorbachev. We would discuss the collapse of the USSR and talk about the GDR.
I: Nikola Tesla. I’d ask him about some of the synthesizer repair tips.
Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
V: Art Space Zuzeum in Riga, Latvia. I performed in this kind of place for the first time, it felt like I was in space. It was an awesome gig. Another one is LOFTAS in Vilnius, Lithuania because it was one of the biggest and highest-quality gigs abroad.
A: Pogłos in Warszawa, Poland. Seriously, it's one of the coolest clubs I’ve ever been to. It’s located on the outskirts and attracts only real subculturers, plenty of whom live in Warsaw. So you can really feel the authenticity. Great sound and a huge bar/terrace are also among its benefits.
I: It is difficult to highlight only one place. I think it’s almost all the big festival venues where we had a chance to play. It’s cool when people with common interests can spend some time together.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
V: Silver Apples. New York, 1967. An amazing group, misunderstood completely. I believe that they were not only one of the first musicians who experimented with electronic sound but also outstripped the appearance of trip-hop for about 30 years.
A: Cybotron.
I: Cerili - post-punk band from Tbilisi, Georgia.
The first track you played on repeat?
V: 'Come On' by The Rolling Stones.
A: 'Leather Forever' by Miss Kittin, The Hacker.
I: 'Fire Of The Mind' by Coil.
A song that defines the teenage you?
V: 'Я не верю в анархию' by Гражданская Оборона.
A: 'Колумбарий' by Пурген (album 'Все государства - концлагеря').
I: 'группа крови' by Кино.
One record you would keep forever?
V: 'The Stooges' by The Stooges (1969). 'No Fun' – it’s one of my favourite songs from one of the best albums ever.
A: 'AZD' by Actress. The vinyl is very cool and artistically designed (you should check it). Its content is artistic as well.
I: 'Computer Love' by Kraftwerk.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
V: 'O Children' by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
A: 'Cactus' by Pixies.
I: 'Night In June' by Linear Movement.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
V: 'Top Floor, Bottom Buzzer' by Morphine. The perfect one for the condition which may lead me straight on the dance floor.
A: '4 Club Use Only' by Delroy Edwards.
I: 'MaH' by Chemical Brothers.
A song you wished you had written?
V: 'Mother' by Idles.
A: 'Serpentskirt' by Cocteau Twins.
I: Russian anthem.
Best song to turn up loud?
V: 'Black Math' by The White Stripes.
A: 'STONEFIST' by HEALTH.
I: 'The House Of The Rising Sun' by The Animals.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
A: 'Гостиница «Космос»' by Mnogoznaal.
I: 'Жизнь это кайф' by Сосо Павлиашвили.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
V: 'Perfect Day' by Lou Reed.
A: 'Fade Into You' by Mazzy Star.
I: 'Atmosphere' by Joy Division.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
V: Viagra Boys (SWE), Speedometer (ENG), Lucie, Too (JP).
A: Sink Ya Teeth, Sally Dige.
I: The new becomes too old too soon.
