A Porridge Radio Photo
Name, where are you from?
Porridge Radio. Our band was formed in Brighton. I'm from London though.
Describe your style in three words?
Stupid little boy.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I can’t choose one best show ever because choosing a best of anything seems redundant, but Big Thief at Green Man last year was really special for me.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Linkin Park and The Cranberries. Imagine the emotional heights that show would reach.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
DIY art and music subcultures have influenced me in a big way. Sharing the art you make is scary, especially when you aren't a part of art and music industries or institutions. When I was starting out making music, it was the DIY scene where I learnt that I was allowed to just try things out and not have to know exactly how to do it yet and that there are always people who want to help be a part of and support the things you make. I also used to make zines, which is all about self-publishing and uplifting smaller voices. I've learnt a lot from the people who I've made music and art with over the years who have been doing it out of a compulsion to do it rather than to make money out of it.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
My great-grandma who I never met. I find family history really fascinating.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
I don't have a favourite, but house shows always feel the best. At the end of 2018, we did a monthly residency show in Georgie from our band’s house with a bunch of other bands we love (Kaputt, Garden Centre, Abattoir Blues, Goat Girl, Great Dad and A House In The Trees). Loads of things about those shows were really chaotic but it felt really raw and intimate and was ultimately really special and fun.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Satanic Ritual Abuse is a legend.
Porridge Radio released their new album 'Every Bad' in March 2020 via Secretly Canadian. Watch the Rachel Winton, Ben Cole and Tash Lever directed video for their latest single 'Circling' below.
The first track you played on repeat?
Noel Harrison - 'Windmills of Your Mind'
I remember listening to this in the car with my dad when I was about 7 and becoming completely obsessed with it.
A song that defines the teenage you?
Radiohead - 'A Wolf At The Door'
I was obsessed with Radiohead as a teenager.
One record you would keep forever?
Neil Young - 'On The Beach' is so special to me.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
Kevin Morby - 'O Behold'
I love Kevin Morby's lyrics a lot, especially this song.
A song you wished you had written?
Phoebe Bridgers - 'Motion Sickness'
I don't know if I wish I had written anything, but I'd love to write a song like this.
Best song to turn up loud?
Sharon Van Etten - 'Are We There'.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
Charli XCX - 'Boys'.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
I'm not an all-nighter kind of person but LCD Soundsystem - 'All My Friends'.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
Drug Store Romeos!
