Name, where are you from?
RĒD°, Taiwan.

What do you do?
I am a singer.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Masego World Tour 2017 Live in Taipei is my favourite gig. Although the concert venue, The Wall Livehouse, wasn't so big, it didn't stop Masego showcasing his grooving talent, which filled the air with an incredible energy, touching every audience. Masego's saxophone sidekick rocked the show with him. To date this gig remains the top of my list.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I have been very influenced by the Hip Hop culture, which was something I learned about in high school when I started doing street dance. Later, I became a dancer in college and then an R&B singer. Hip Hop continues to be a big part of me, even now that I do podcasting.

Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Clapper Studio at Syntrend Mall. My very first gig was held here, with the rest of the members from CHING G SQUAD. The day was cherished with special memories.

If you could be on the line up with any bands in history?
I would like to perform alongside FKJ, a French producer/artist. His music is just soothing and relaxing in most unexpected ways. Imagine if I could ever perform next to him!

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Khalil Fong is my favourite Chinese singer. I was awestruck by how perfectly he incorporated R&B into Chinese music. His voice is soulful and impossible to forget. It would be delirious to jam next to him, even if just for one hour.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Great music is never solo work. In this industry, everyone who works behind the scenes is an unsung hero, that is, from the composer, producer, planner, to anyone that contributes to perfecting the work. Their dedication is what enables us artists to do our favourite thing. I would like to express deep gratitude to them.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Ignition' by R. Kelly. I first heard this song in high school, when I began learning dance basics. I think it’s from a dance practice playlist shared by a senior girl from the school dance club. We worked our moves with the rhythm in the classroom. I just fell in love with it, and couldn’t stop grooving with it.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Red' by SUGARCAT. One of the lines from the song says: “from black, white, to yellow, red is always the most colourful one”. The song is both simple and vibrant, perfect for the teenage me.

One record you would keep forever?
FKJ’s album 'French Kiwi Juice' is definitely the one I will always keep. It has accompanied me through countless time I spent alone. It would be the album to bring if I were to go to a deserted island.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
“Remember me
Fresh out of black and white
Movie, movie
On every screen
What would you realize
What you meant to me, was a mystery”

From 'Movie' by Tom Mitch. It's just beautiful. These lines are simple, but they are deep, meaningful and touching.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Honesty' by Pink Sweat$. This song’s chorus is done with a falsetto voice because the pitch is quite high. I sing it at the top of my lungs when I shower!

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Health & Happiness' by Goat. It is about how fame doesn’t always bring happiness, which made me ponder: “is what we pursue worthwhile? Perhaps I should go after happiness, freedom, and not performance or material.” At the start, it was just a good song, but the more I listened to it, the more the philosophy hit me. I was surprised to find myself in tears.

New bands you are listening to now?
I’ve been listening to Sunkis, a featured artist who made appearances in OZI and Shi Shi’s albums. He’s an emerging R&B singer, also a personal friend of mine. His voice and music work is melodic and fresh, but also delivers a sense of strength, which is very soothing and easy to listen to.
