What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
The gig by Blur at Hyde park in 2009, after they had got back together. It was 2 days live and I went there both days. Hyde Park is my favourite park in London and I’ve been a big fan of Blur ever since they made their debut.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
The '60s. I've been influenced by the music, fashion, culture and art of that time since my childhood. I got to like the Beatles because of my father’s influence, but I was later fascinated by the ‘swinging London’ culture and the creative, challenging spirit of the period. I also came to be interested in the connections between music and visual presentation that were being formed at that time.
If you could be on the line up with any bands in history?
It would have to be the Beatles. It would be just great if I could see one of their gigs from around the time they released 'Rubber Soul', my favourite album.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
This might not be the right answer but I would just like to go see amazing gigs, some of the ones which have gone down in musical history. I think that being in the same venue with artists is actually not much different to spending time with them one-on-one.
The first track you played on repeat?
Not a track but an album: 'Rubber Soul' by the Beatles.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Drive My Car' by the Beatles. This is the tune I always listen to when I go back to London, and it kind of represents an early ambition of mine as well.
One record you would keep forever?
'Rubber Soul' by the Beatles. The melodies, the lyrics and the arrangement all perfectly reflect the time. I’ve been listening to this album for my whole life, so all of the things like the way it flows, the intervals between tunes and the texture of the sound feel a part of me nowadays.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
'All You Need is Love' by the Beatles. The simple but strong message, that love is all, that it's everything. This is the mindset I try to put myself in when I am doing creation.
Best song to turn up loud?
This would be 'Parklife' by Blur. I sang it at the gig held in Hyde Park.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
The bands I mainly chose for my playlist are inevitably British male bands, but I like female vocalists too, like Marianne Faithfull back in the '60s.
