Name, where are you from?
Phillie, Greg and Mike, from Brighton.
Describe your style in three words?
Dark and Stormy.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
P: Yak – it’s visceral, engaging and unpredictable.
G: First time I saw Queens of the Stone Age as I didn't know anything about them at the time but came out a superfan.
M: The Tallest Man on Earth in a church in Brighton – playing in front of Jesus on the cross.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Queens of the Stone Age are probably the most consistent influence to all of us in their musicianship, songwriting, production and everything; so definitely them. Also maybe PJ Harvey – the poetry in her lyrics really influences our songwriting and she’s such an incredible performer.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
We’re a bit of a mix: '70s punk, '60s blues rock, '90s alternative. And aesthetically we are really interested and influenced by the '80s/'90s post-punk lyricism in general – people like Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, their poetry and the creative landscapes they helped create.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
It’d probably have to be Alasdair Gray, the Scottish writer and artist, who sadly died recently. He inspired us a lot especially at the start of the band and his work really influenced our imagination and creative output so it would be great to have a conversation with him as he seemed funny and weird.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
It’s sadly closed now but Sticky Mike’s in Brighton. It was the first venue we ever played and always had a great atmosphere. The vibe there – sort of like a dingy basement but more fun than creepy – was like nothing else. We’d end up there all the time and always have a good night.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
People who put on gigs at small venues – owners, promoters, anyone involved in the grassroots music scene. It seems like small venues are closing more and more these days which makes it tougher to find great up and coming bands. There are so many great new artists out there, but everyone has to start somewhere and it takes those local promoters, bookers etc. to give them a platform.

The first track you played on repeat?
P: 'Time Is Running Out' by Muse.
G: 'White Room' by Cream; it’s the song that made me buy my first guitar effect, a Dunlop Crybaby, which started my pedal addiction.
M: Growing up I only had two CDs – NOW 50 and NOW 53 – so I know them inside out; I think 'Fat Lip' by Sum41 was probably my go-to track.
A song that defines the teenage you?
P: 'Fantasia in D Minor' by Mozart; I would play it on the piano every day after I came back from school, I liked how dramatic it felt and represented all my inner turmoil in one piece.
G: 'Jumpin’ Jack Flash' by The Rolling Stones.
M: 'Just' by Radiohead.
One record you would keep forever?
P: 'Blood Pressures' by The Kills.
G: '…Like Clockwork' by Queens of the Stone Age.
M: 'The Big Come Up' by The Black Keys.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"A million candles burning for the help that never came,
You want it darker, we kill the flame."
From 'You Want It Darker' by Leonard Cohen. The whole song is beautiful poetry, especially this line.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
P: 'Kool Thing' by Sonic Youth.
G: '99 Luftballons' by NENA.
M: 'Loco In Acapulco' by The Four Tops.
A song you wished you had written?
'M.T.M.E.' by Alexandra Savior is a really well-rounded and put together song. Every element appeals to us from the lyrics and vocal delivery to the instrumentation and songwriting to the overall production.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Yuk Foo' by Wolf Alice.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
P: 'Bury A Friend' by Billie Eilish.
G: 'Entre Dos Aguas' by Paco de Lucia.
M: 'bmbmbm' by Black Midi.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Wuthering Heights' by Kate Bush. We’ve ended a few nights drunkenly dancing/singing to that.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Right Round The Clock' by Sorry.
'Seven' by Just Mustard.
'Hear Me Out!' by Valeras.
'Creeping' by Noise Noir.
