A TAAHLIAH Photo
Name, where are you from?
TAAHLIAH and I live in Glasgow, Scotland.
Describe your style in three words?
'90s femme vibes.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
FKA twigs in 2014 at the Òran Mór in Glasgow. It was such a memorable moment for me, it's completely etched into my brain. I remember what I wore, how tiny the stage was and the MacBook sat on the stage and what the screensaver was. I think I was first or second in the queue so I was right at the barrier. It was the first gig I’d ever been to and my first experience of live music. I remember buying the ticket on Ticketmaster so clearly because it was one of the only times I’d ever used my credit card online, at that point in time. I was around fifteen at the time and I found her music so intoxicating and profound.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Purity Ring and Lana Del Rey. Both of these artists have shaped my growth, as a human and an artist, through my adolescence and into my adult life — I’ve been obsessed with both since I was around fourteen.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Queer subculture, Afrofuturism, rave, internet subculture.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Maya Angelou. If you know who Maya Angelou is, I don’t think I need to explain.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
EartH in Hackney, London. Completely and utterly beautiful.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
I don’t know what counts as unsung, to be honest. I feel like that's a completely subjective term. I have been listening to a lot of Caroline Polachek recently. Her voice is so captivating and intelligent. I found out a couple of months ago that she wrote 'No Angel', one of the tracks from Beyonce’s self-titled album.
TAAHLIAH recently released their new track 'Bodies'. The new single follows the release of an extended version of TAAHLIAH's debut EP 'Angelica' back in December 2021. Listen, purchase or stream both releases via linktr.ee/taahliah.
The first track you played on repeat?
'It’s Raining Men' by The Weather Girls. The first song I became obsessed with, at the age of three, according to my mum.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'A World Alone' by Lorde or 'The Morning' by The Weeknd.
One record you would keep forever?
'Shrines' by Purity Ring.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“My coconuts! You can pop em in your mouth!”
From 'Coconuts' by Kim Petras.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'New Emotion' by The Time Frequency.
A song you wished you had written?
'Love In The Dark' by Adele.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Immaterial' by SOPHIE.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'We Get On' by Kate Nash.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Butterfly' by Grimes.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Casings' by Ethel Cain.
'Amygdala' by Ecco2k, Bladee.
'What’s the Word - Wax Wings Remix' by Cakes da Killa.
'Cherry' by Doss.
