A Cage The Elephant Photo
Name, where are you from?
Matt Shultz, from Bowling Green, Kentucky
Describe your style in three words?
Shirt, trousers, shoes.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
The Rolling Stones at Lollapalooza, LCD Soundsystem at the same festival were great too.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Well actually one of them I've already played with - when we supported The Rolling Stones, and the other would probably be Iggy Pop.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
So many, Punk, Afro-beat...
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Winston Churchill, I've watched some documentaries about him and he seems like a very interesting character.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
John Fogerty from Creedence Clearwater Revival or Paul Simon from Simon & Garfunkel. They Should be up there with Dylan in terms of songwriting.
Matt Schultz is the enigmatic lead singer of Cage The Elephant. Cage The Elephant recently returned with their fifth studio album 'Social Cues', released by Columbia Records in April 2019, you can purchase or stream it at smarturl.it/cteSocialCues.
You can watch the video for their latest single 'Night Running' below. It's a collaboration with Beck who they will also be touring the US with later this year. Tickets available at www.cagetheelephant.com/tour.
You can also watch the video for recent single 'Ready To Let Go' which was directed by Matt below too.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Sounds of Silence' by Simon & Garfunkel.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Paint It Black' by The Rolling Stones.
One record you would keep forever?
'Diamond Dogs' by David Bowie.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers
Just a come-on from the whores
On Seventh Avenue
I do declare
There were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there,"
'The Boxer' by Simon & Garfunkel. To write something like that, that honest, at that period in time is so inspiring.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Let's Dance' by David Bowie.
A song you wished you had written?
'I Can't Hardly Stand It' by The Cramps.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Black Skinhead' by Kanye West.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
Anything from 'Murder Ballads' by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
Parquet Courts, Sunflower Bean...
