03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Celaviedmai aka Mai (pronounced like 'my') and I’m from Galway, Ireland.

Describe your style in three words?
Energetic, sensual and empowering.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
It sounds strange yeah, but Chris Brown when he came to Ireland like maybe ten years ago. His concert blew me away, I was starstruck and let’s be honest, he was fine as hell. He’s an entertainer, he really pulls you in.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
If I only get two acts: Obviously Beyoncé, is that even a question? She’s everything. And Burna Boy, he is just wow. The sound of his voice melts me, he really knows how to serenade a girl, you know?

Which Subcultures have influenced you?
I love the culture around Afrobeat music, it’s so unique and makes you feel so so good. It started with this guy Fela who was from Nigeria and he was just honestly amazing a true icon. I'm loving the artist Rema at the moment.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Maya Angelou - because of her poetry. I’d love to know what she went through, understand her mindset and how she processed her experiences into inspiration. I feel there would be so much to learn from her.

Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
In terms of places I’ve performed, my current favourite is the Workman’s Club in Dublin. It’s not that the venue is fancy or nothing, but it was where my first headline gig was and everything about it was amazing, so it’s special for me.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Ok, I know Azealia Banks is controversial but when it comes to her talents, she’s so underrated. She’s amazing live, so versatile and also misunderstood. But I get her and I can relate to her artistically.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Always Be My Baby' by Mariah Carey. It was always on when I was younger, it might have been my parents' love song! I don’t wanna know though. Either way, it always stuck with me.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Party in the USA' by Miley Cyrus. I remember hearing this when I was a teenager being like ok I’m a grown lady now, I have freedom now!

One record you would keep forever?
'Acid Rap' by Chance the Rapper. When that came out I was going through so much and it helped me connect with my creativity and vulnerability. It was important to me at the time and still is, my favourites are 'Good Ass Intro' and also 'Cocoa Butter Kisses'.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
"who needs a heart when a heart can be brokennnn?"

From 'What’s Love Got to Do With It' by Tina Turner. When she sings - I love it!

A song you wished you had written?
'My Favourite Part' by Mac Miller ft. Ariana Grande. Mac has a special place in my heart, I opened for him a few years ago in Ireland and he was mesmerizing. This song does something to me.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Intimidation' by Melanin Tee ft. Celaviedmai. I gotta say, this recent collab I did with Melanin Tee deserves to be turned up LOUD.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'That’s What You Get' by Paramore. I used to be very interested in punk and rock, cause I went through a kind of emo-mindset phase when I was younger. I know it sounds weird, but you can be inspired from so many different things and to this day I love this song.

The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Cater 2 U' by Destiny's Child. If you don't feel sexy dancing to that... well then damn!

Best song to end an all-nighter?
If I was at a celebration or something I’d love to hear like the 'Cha Cha Slide' so everyone will dance, it makes me laugh and everyone knows the moves. But if we were out all night and just chilling at a session, I wanna hear things like 'Hit Me Up' by Tomike to vibe to.

Any new bands you are into at the moment?
There are so many amazing acts at the moment, but Bobbi Arlo is about to pop off, she’s a talented lady! Also, Nealo, who’s not new but has a new album out and genuinely every song is so good. Ireland is the place to listen to, watch this space.
