A Grace Savage Photo
Name, where are you from?
Grace Savage, from Devon, Living in London
Describe your style in three words?
Bright, Cheap and Cheerful?!
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Beyonce (and Jay-Z) because BEYONCE! I reckon she is one of the only truly iconic music figures from our generation….if we’re talking global superstar status, no one else matches her. When I was watching her, it felt like I was witnessing something seriously rare. It was a once in a lifetime kind of gig.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Old School I’d say The Cardigans because Nina Persson is an absolute badass songwriter and has such a demanding stage presence - I saw them perform the 20 year anniversary of their album Gran Turismo recently and fell in love with her a little bit more.
New School - Sylvan Esso - These guys are a recent discovery for me and I just love their style; dark synths, sweet melodies and slick production.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
The 5th element of Hip Hop (Beatboxing) is where it all started for me musically. There was a massive Hip Hop, Drum & Bass and Dubstep scene down in the West Country where I grew up and that’s where I found my love for bass and electronic music. The first beatboxer I ever saw live was Rahzel (absolute legend) in Exeter and the first time I ever heard Dubstep was on a night out in Bristol (where the genre was born). I was saturated in and inspired by the infectious nature of these beats from a young age.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Maya Angelou - Poet, Singer, Writer, Activist. She lived the most incredibly inspiring life and was such a WISE and humble and joyful woman. I feel like an hour with her would be enough to inspire me for a lifetime.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
It’s sooo hard to choose but I’d say playing at the Sydney Opera House (as a musician touring with Sylvie Guillem) was a pretty defining moment in my career. Not everyone gets to play there.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
TrueMendous. Seen this girl perform a couple of times now and have been blown away both times by her talent, flow and stage presence. She deserves all the success.
Grace Savage released her new EP 'Cracks' on the 17th May 2019, listen, stream or purchase it at orcd.co/j2rl2zj.
The first track you played on repeat?
The first album I ever bought ON CASSETTE 'Don’t Speak' by No Doubt.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Come As You Are' by Nirvana.
One record you would keep forever?
I’d keep the whole FRANK album forever but I’m not allowed so I choose this one '(There Is) No Greater Love' Amy Winehouse.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“Ring the bells that still can ring,
forget your perfect offering,
there is a crack in everything,
that’s how the light gets in.”
'Anthem' by Leonard Cohen.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Hold You - Hold Yuh' by Gyptian.
A song you wished you had written?
'Jolene' by Dolly Parton.
Best song to turn up loud?
'212' by Azealia Banks, Lazy Jay.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'The Beautiful People' by Marilyn Manson.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Limit To Your Love' by James Blake.
Any new artists you are listening to right now?
'EverGreen' by YEBBA.
'Biddy Bop' by Noname.
'Waiting Game' by BANKS.
'Herside Story' by GoldLink.
'Fire With Fire' by Femme.
'Genetics' by Young Monarch.
