Musician — Wellingborough
A House of EL Photo
Name, where are you from?
HOUSE OF EL aka Kieron McIntosh and I’m from a town called Wellingborough near Northampton. NN baby!..
Describe your style in three words?
Classic, inventive and evolving.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Prince at the Electric Ballroom, he did a funk set and played a bunch of James Brown covers… was mind-blowing.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Prince and Miles Davis… both in their electric phrase. It would be eclectic, musically it could go anywhere but also would be a proper rock and roll affair…
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Jazz and grime, when I was a kid - grime was big - everyone had their own bars, and there used to be a lot of fighting and battles. I like that aggression, but at the same time I was into jazz, me and my mates used to share records and learn tunes. The combo made me love intricate flows and melodies but also aggression and directness.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Miles Davis. He did everything and he had the best style of any musician ever. You could talk about anything.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
Shepherds Bush Empire is a legendary venue and Alexander Palace is great, they carry a prestige and on the right night can be legendary, but the ultimate is Glastonbury Pyramid stage… it’s like church a religious experience. I have to play it!
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Would have to be my early music teacher Ruth Allen, she gave me my first shots to learn music and play small gigs. She also wasn’t afraid to tell me off from time to time because I was a naughty boy sometimes!
House of EL will release his new mixtape 'BOOK OF EL' on Friday 21st January 2022. Pre-order or pre-save it via bfan.link/new-release-1077.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Sweet Like Chocolate' by Shanks & Bigfoot… I was a kid and that was a big record!
A song that defines the teenage you?
F*ck Radio bootleg by JME.
One record you would keep forever?
'Kind Of Blue' by Miles Davis. It’s got everything.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Lyrical Lord, run up in da rave wid a shield and a sword"
By Skepta.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'September' by Earth, Wind & Fire. Straight cookout family BBQ vibes. Pure people pleaser!
A song you wished you had written?
Any song off 'Songs In The Key Of Life' by Stevie Wonder. Perfect flawless writing… no mistakes.
Best song to turn up loud?
Anything by Migos, loud and ignorant is a vibe sometimes.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Body' by Tion Wayne. Very shelly!
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'I Can Only Whisper' by Charlotte Day Wilson (ft. BADBADNOTGOOD).
Any new music you are listening to right now?
Floweroflov, she’s got a vibe I like her.
