A Luke Radford Photo
Name, where are you from?
Luke Radford, Nottingham.
Describe your style in three words?
Bits and pieces.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Tough to pick one. Lots of old raves that blur into one memory, Rubberdub at Marcus Garvey/Blueprint. Oneman at Stealth. Sleaford Mods at Rock City a few years ago.
If you could work with any artist in history?
Director Francis Ford Coppola between 1971 - 1979, when he made The Godfather 1 and 2 and Apocalypse Now. They had a big impact on me. I'd just sit in the corner and take notes.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
Elements of Skinhead and Mod, but Grime is the most prominent and influential subculture of my generation - the music, fashion, dialect and DIY ethos approach to music and film.
Of all the places you’ve shown your work, which is your favourite?
I recently made a documentary with Notts filmmaker Toby Curson about Anthony Flavin. He's had a hard life growing up in the care system, but through Northern Soul music he's been able to find community and belonging. We wanted to share Ant's story and give a platform to people who generally get ignored and marginalised.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Nick Stez - Nottingham producer, mentor and youth worker.
You can watch or stream 'Soul Boy' at www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000jk57.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Clint Eastwood' by Gorillaz.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Da Mystery of Chessboxin’ by Wu-Tang Clan.
One record you would keep forever?
'Etched Headplate' by Burial.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
'The Boy With The Thorn In His Side' by The Smiths.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Crazy Love' by MJ Cole.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Seasons' by Lil Silva.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Couldn't Love You More' by Sade.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'These Arms Of Mine' by Otis Redding.
Any new bands you are listening to right now?
Notts artists:
'Copenhagen' by Camille Christel.
'Alpha' by Snowy.
