A Mystic Peach Photo
Name, where are you from?
Mystic Peach. Curtis (guitar/vocals) Joe (bass/backing vocals) and Jimi (drums/the occasional yell). We’re from surrounding areas of Southampton.
Describe your style in three words?
Tarantino’s failed protagonists.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Collectively as a band, will have to say Temples in Nantes. We supported them on the France leg of their tour in March 2020 but there was this sense of impending doom (Covid-19) and we didn’t know how much longer this tour would go on for, so we just went into full-send-mode. We watched Temples after our set whilst wetting the ol’ whistle and selling merch. Temples are an incredible live band, lovely people and very talented. (And incredibly patient with a constantly drunk, ecstatic band on their first tour). We got invited back to an Irish bar after that gig, Curtis was singing Erasure to a guy sleeping at the bar. Everyone inside then joined in. We then met a French punk band and we got drunk. Good times.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Queens of the Stoneage. Incredibly influential to us, a no-bullsh*t band and LOUD. FIDLAR: I mean… Who wouldn’t want to play with FIDLAR? It would just be such a fun show and their fans are great. Incredibly accepting and will mosh to music they’ve never heard. Perfect atmosphere for a support band.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Mods. Goths. Punks. Grunge. Shoegaze.
C: I’ve gone from mod to football casual to a flannel-wearing miserable grunger. But I’ve always gone back to mod styling in between and it’s been a massive part of my life. But I’ve somehow integrated a goth/new romantic swing to it. I’ve always loved the style but was too self-conscious to get fully into it when I was younger.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Ozzy Osbourne. We watch videos of him when we’re in the studio, hungover and feeling sorry for ourselves. He instantly cheers us up and he’s such a vibe. We’ll be honoured to have him accuse us of being in his room and taking his beers away.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
King Tuts in Glasgow. Great sound, incredible venue and Glaswegians - the perfect recipe for a good gig. Played there recently with Gallus and She and it really went off. Never felt so welcome. We have to give a shout out to our local, The Joiners though. Those walls have witnessed some special moments and it’s run by superhumans.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Brian Cox. Writes an absolute banger, then pisses off to talk about the cosmos. And his skin is fantastic, wonderful man.
The first track you played on repeat?
'All Apologies' by Nirvana.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Brimful Of Asha - Norman Cook Remix' by Cornershop.
One record you would keep forever?
'Happy People' by Peace.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“Broken hearts are yours and mine, crooked teeth from empty smiles. I’ll take what you prescribe, medicated false reply”
From 'Swan Song' by Giant Drag.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'I Surrender' by Eddie Holman.
A song you wished you had written?
'Myth' by Beach House.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Alas Salvation' by YAK.
Best song to bring people together?
'Can’t Help Falling In Love' by Elvis Presley.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'All The Things She Said' by t.A.T.u.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'True' by Spandau Ballet.
Any new bands you are listening to right now?
'S.I.T.T.M' by Big Softy.
'Frank' by Just Mustard.
'Blame' by Ulysses Wells.
'Oh That’s Life' by Gold Steppers.
'Upper Hand' by Defcon Lawless (ft. Band Of Skulls).
