If you could make a record with anyone from history?
Bobby Womack is a hero of mine. It would have been great to have been around when he was making The Poet album because it was such an unexpected success. 'If You Think You’re Lonely Now' epitomises the Bobby Womack songwriting style for me and I love the story of how he got the idea for the name of the song - overhearing his mate on the phone to his missus!

What’s the best show you’ve ever been to?
Richard Hawley at The Roundhouse because although I’d heard a couple of his records before I wasn’t expecting to be so blown away. My favourite track on the night was 'I Still Want You', which contains the beautiful lyric “We can move our bodies like a twist of smoke”.

What British music icons inspire your sound today?
Ian Dury. He wasn’t a singer, but his lyrics were pure genius and he surrounded himself with amazing musicians. 'Wake Up and Make Love With Me' has to be one of the greatest ever opening tracks on an album. 

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Curtis Mayfield. I’ve just finished 'Travelling Soul', the biography his son, Todd, wrote. I was brought up listening to The Impressions and Curtis, more than anyone, made me realise that socially-conscious lyrics were the way forward. He used to take his kids to the studio with him whilst he was working on new records, imagine how much you’d learn if you’d tagged along! 

Which British subculture means the most to you?
The Northern Soul scene because it started my musical journey with the band. It’s also how I met my girlfriend and a lot of my best mates. 

If you could share the bill with any British band in history?
'Do I Wanna Know' by Arctic Monkeys is a modern masterpiece. Although we’re different in terms of musical style, I’d be confident their fans would connect with our lyrics.

What music did you listen to growing up?
A lot of soul! We always drove to France or Germany for our summer holidays and there was a lot of Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. My favourite of his was 'Knocks Me Off My Feet'.

New Street Adventure are a London-based quartet signed to Acid Jazz Records. They play a unique blend of groove-laden indie-soul. Their second album 'Stubborn Sons' was released in March 2017.
